Walt Cannoy Suedeblast

From the moment I first saw a picture of Walt Cannoy’s suedeblast it was my mission to acquire one for my American carvers collection.

The intricate swirls it creates are mesmerizing. There’s so much detail in this specific blast. It also feels nice in the hand when holding the pipe.

I haven’t seen too many pop up on the estate market. My guess would be because it’s such a unique finish collectors that bought them new are holding on to them. I’m also sure part of it is because Walt just makes a damn good smoker. The draw is effortless and the button is extremely comfortable.

That is indeed pretty cool!
The patterns remind me of ultra enlarged details in digital photographs. Technically its considered "Noise" but on this its really nice.

I’m not so sure and I know some carvers are very hush hush (too shy shy hush hush eye to eye) about what blasting medium they use. I want to say someone mentioned thinking or hearing he was using fine glass as a blasting medium and then changing the PSI to a certain level to get this finish.

There was one on the SPC estates this last week actually. First I had seen on the secondary market.

I seem to recall reading if briar is treated with oxalic acid, then sandblasted, something very close to the “suedeblast” can be achieved.

Thanks for the feedback on possible technique. Hadn't thought about oxalic acid, it does almost look like an etch of one of the 'phases' of wood fiber. Maybe that followed by a fine blast. Will have to search for the Instagram content.

I normally like blasts but that is too much of a good thing,
