Hey guys so I've decided I really like the looks of the volcano style but so far haven't found very many in my price range (I generally try to stay around 100 bucks or less). So I was wondering A. are they worth the money and B. what is it about them that makes them more expensive? is it a harder shape to carve or just a less popular shape and therefore fewer makers bother? There was a similar question on here not to long ago about blowfish which is another shape I would like to get my hands on.

I have 4. Are they worth the money compared to other shapes? Not really, but I like them. They have a lot of briar so tend to smoke cooler.

Comoy's of London made a volcano, No. 410 it was. A rare shape for a factory pipe. The thicker walls at the base of the bowl presumably dissipate the excess heat generated in this region in the second half of a smoke.

Thanks guys those are some pretty pipes. I know a blowfish is a bit farther down the line, but I think a nice volcano might be something I'll try to find in the near future. I found a nice one on ebay a few weeks ago but my budget wouldn't let me do it given my other fairly recent purchases. I guess I'm always drawn to the unique and interesting shapes and designs. Looks like what it comes down to is just saving up for those extra special ones that catch my eye.

I just recently acquired this one, because I also got my hands on a Lepeltier Cognac, which is shaped like a briar Volcano. I fell in love with the shape on the first smoke of the Lep. This is a Lostallo, never heard of them and didn't find really anything about them online, but took a chance anyway. It smokes like a dream, and is so comfortable to hold, I'll have to get more of them now. :puffy:

The shape is attractive, which is why I purchased the thing. The bit was a bit on the thick side, but what I liked most about it was that the chamber coating imparted no flavors to the tobacco and it smoked really well from the first light. I like pipes that are thicker at the base for cooling purposes, but the issue doesn't come up unless you smoke your tobacco all the way to the bottom.

I love the shape. Bruce Weaver makes some fantastic blasted volcanos. The one below is for sale right now at his site. I have had my eye on it but I'm on a pipe diet at the moment. Would love it if one of you brothers grabbed it.

That Bruce Weaver volcano is amazing! Maybe it won't be sold and I can pick it up for cheap at the Chicago Show. And maybe I'll be named King of Siam.
I was mesmerized by this volcano on Scott Thile's site. Of course, I waited too long and it got snatched up.

I think I remember seeing some volcano pipes on Dr Bob Pipes website.
I do not have any pipes made by him so far but they look nice.

I picked this Hardcastle's JackO'London up from Ebay a few years back as an unsmoked estate for $50.00 I don't know if it's a real Volcano or just a squat something or other but it smokes good and I felt I needed one odd shape in my rotation :)
