I'm going to New Orleans in January as well! Going to attend a conference on contaminated sediments. I've been to New Orleans twice in the past 25 years. While I am there I will walk all around the French Quarter, hitting the French Market and just absorbing the essence of this great city. For this trip I have planned a walking itinerary that will take me to several smoke shops that are near the French Quarter. I am also going to ride the trolley to the graveyards, then catch a local bus to a Tinder Box in Metairie. Also would like to visit the WWII museum.

The Roosevelt Hotel did originate the Sazarac Cocktail, from what I remember. Too many bars, too few lightening trips to city.
Old Meterie has a number of great bars as well. The NOLA Pipe club used to meet at Winstons. There are some beautiful homes in that area.

You could always send some of us locals here a message and we can meet up for a smoke! I'd be happy to do that
Personally I understand all the "New Orleans bucket list" items like Café Du Monde. But don't forget that there are some really awesome local places to eat that are off the beaten path which to me, are far better. Such as:
Atchafalaya

Lola's **** AWESOME

Neyow's

Satsuma
Just a few places we like.

The Tinderbox in Metairie has a nice inventory of pipes, bulk and tinned tobacco...the guys there are very knowledgable also, The Mayan Exchange on Magazine St. Has a decent inventory of pipes and tobacco but the employees there are clueless about pipes and tobacco...Don Juans is located in Metairie not far from the Tinderbox but they don't have anything but a few cheap Basket Pipes and some Peterson Tins...I wouldnt waste time there, unless your looking for a big lounge and big cigar inventory.

Would any locals want to meet up on the 15th to smoke a bowl?

Nolacajun hit it right on the nose… that's a good Tinderbox and Mayan is the only decent place in town for pipes of any kind. They actually have a nice pipe selection to stare at. And lots of tins. I'm up for a smoke and I'll let you know as the 15th approaches, is that a Thursday?

I can't make the car trip to Metairie from Harvey very often, so I can't make the meetings. If you guys meet in the quarter or mid-city I might be able to make it and finally get to meet y'all. Let me know where the your meeting on the 15th and I'll make every effort to join you.
+1 on Cafe Atchafalaya. They have outdoor tables but I'm not sure about smoking policy and, to me, some of the best food on the planet.
I have to laugh at this...the last time I had fresh oysters on the shell they were 50 cents/doz. Of coarse that was in 1975
I went to Baton Rouge for the funeral of a friend about 4 years ago and afterwards we went to this little dive that served oysters on Thursdays for $0.25 a piece. Schooner beer and a few dozen oysters will ease any troubled mind.

(Shameless family promotion warning). Find out if Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Review are playing somewhere. My brother is the drummer!

Just so y'all know, I suggested by message to Zach that we meet up at Bayou Beer Garden. This is absolutely perfect for a pipe meeting, easy to get to and lots of room and tremendous beer selection. I thought of the Bulldog on Magazine but it's much too small and too touristy. A bunch of folks and their pipes at the Beer Garden will be incredible, that's my vote!

Walk the neighborhoods and revel in the architecture of the NO homes.

Jazz. If at all possible listen to Kermit Ruffins, heir apparent to "Satchmo" Louis Armstrong

Eats. Court of the Two Sisters is wonderful.
