Good Morning. I am a 50+ year pipe smoker new to this forum.

At present I am looking for solid English tobaccos without Turkish/Oriental, any kind of topping, and little or no Burley. I have a fondness for Virginia, Latakia and Perique blends.

Any recommendations from you fine folks?

A bit of background - I was a real fan of Dunhill 965 and smoked that or other Dunhill blends 90% of the time until 2004 or 2005 when Murray sold to Orlik. IMO the brand became absolute crap. Since that time I have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on every blend that anyone on the internet said it reminded them of 965. Eventually I just gave up. I mentioned to Greg Pease in an online forum that I would give an arm and a leg if he would create a blend that was like 965, but he just replied that he wouldn’t know which one to try and duplicate the Murray or pre-Murray. I sincerely believe at some point, probably due to economics, that there was a turn to cheaper leaf or production methods from most blenders, as not much tastes like the quality I grew up tasting (yes I am older). The Esoterica tobacco line was excellent, but finding is next to impossible.

I'm confused about why you're specifying no oriental while holding up 965 as a standard. It has turkish leaf in it.

For a straight English with no oriental, you might like Commonwealth. For a periqued English my favorite is Joie De Vivre, which is mild lat and oriental with a healthy does of perique.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will probably try or retry most of them.

In the last few years (probably because my tastes have changed) I have smoked a lot of C&D Buffalo Soldier and many cigar leaf blends because of the “straight forward” taste I find in them.

I only mentioned my love of Murray’s 965 as background information for those who might have smoked and loved the old Murray blend. I do know that Murray’s 965 did have some Macedonian/Turkish tobacco in it, but it was light-handed and I never tasted it (except for perhaps some sweetness).

Try Match 20, It's a match to the Murry's blend. Or just find a good Va/Per and get some blending latakia

I have tried Match 20 and don't feel it is even close to the Murray 965 blend. In fact I think it is a match for Kramer's Father Murphy. Both these blends have some kind of topping (however light) and I my mouth despises those kinds of blends.
