I have been smoking pipes for about four or five months now and I admit it is a far more rewarding experience then smoking cigars (which I did for three or four years previous). There is far more of a ritual to it, there are pipes that almost seem to develop personalities and tobacco/pipe combinations that take an ordinary ok blend and turn it into something masterful. Of the blends I have tried (up to a couple dozen) I have not had any better smokes then Virginia blends. That being said, I have not had any worse smokes then Virginia blends and from what I can see I didnt do anything different to separate one from the other! I packed it the same, I puffed on it the same, I even smoked it at the same time a day in a temperature controlled room! This has inevitably led to some frustrating hours spent puffing BUT! as they say, there can be no accomplishment without risk.
For this seemingly negative attribute I have firmly taken to smoking Virginia based blends four bowls out of five and I see no sign of slowing down. It gives me a sense of accomplishment when the flavors burst over my tongue and that depth of flavor is present in this majestic hour spent smoking and it gives me a sense of determination when all I seem to taste is ash. Virginia may be a fickle mistress but it is one that has a firm hold on my heart.

I only smoke virginias on the hottest days of summer, with a dedicated pipe, outside, and with an ipa to drink. Any other scenario doesnt work for me lol.

Virginias certainly tend to be the most picky of the types of blends to smoke. To make things even more complicated, every flake/blend seems to have it's own characteristics that you have to take in to consideration on top of that. However, once you get it right, the reward is well worth it.

I find Va's you really have to get the moisture level perfect, if it's too dry it becomes really harsh, if it's too wet it becomes really harsh, if you get it just right it's the best. I find pretty much all tobacco is like this but Va's are the most sensitive to a good or bad experience pertaining to the moisture level. But they probably are my favorite, and most of my favorite blends are va forward.

Moisture level is key, and each blend has a different perfect point at which they taste and burn the best. As I always say: trial and error, and plenty of both.

I don't have alot of experience with VA blends, but I have a like-hate relationship with Briar Fox thusfar by C&D.

It can be quite bitter, harsh and one dimensional, but the kick is fantastic........something alluring about it but cruel nontheless.

I do not find this one sweet in the least which is a term used often in reference to them.

Could prolly use some recc's on well like ones.

This is an article that I found helpful

I've been pipe smoking now for five or six years, and I'm just now really warming up to Virginias. They are definitely a different kind of animal when compared to my Burleys, Latakias, ect., but I've come to like them very much for what they have to offer. In general, I find they have their own "brand" of sweetness, without being goopy like aros. They have to be treated nicely while smoking or they'll smack you in the face, but if treated with respect they offer great rewards of flavor and relaxation!

Incidentally, McClelland and Mac Baren blends have become my favorites so far.

Cake, please tell how many matches you would need with this Technique and time frame typically.

You don't need many matches, the key is to smoke slow and before it burns out you slowly puff and get it going again. You have to have the pack right though, which is best on the looser side.

Virginia is so versatile. It blends with burley, Cavendish, Latakia, Perique, and any number of aromatic toppings.

Virginias blend with other Virginias as well. With some trial and error, you can get it to behave mostly really well.

I am slowly getting back into straight VA after a hiatus of some years. I used to love them but on smoking them again find that it will be an acquired taste when and if my return is more secure.
I've got some good blends on my tobacco bar:
FVF

Silver Flake (not quite "straight")

I smoke Va,vaper and vabur flakes exclusively and have found that the style and size of pipe will make a difference as well as packing, humidity, and smoking technique. I pack my flakes pretty firm when I cube cut which gives me a cool, and flavorful smoke. When I fold and stuff, I make sure I leave room for the tobacco to expand. Some of my flakes expand more than others so I had to get a feel for that which took some experimenting. The cut of the tobacco makes a difference in how you pack so you cannot treat all Virginia's the same. If you give us an idea of what types of blends you are smoking, we could maybe give you some advice on packing and smoking them and what pipes might work best.
