Well, you'll get 7000 different suggestions here....
Sweet and pungent: Red and Black from McClelland. Ridiculous.
Sweet and mild: Either Capstan
Sweet and sour: Brunello from Savinelli
Sweet and earthy: Gawith stuff - Full Virginia Flake, Best Brown Flake
Right dead on down the middle of the virginia spectrum: HH Pure Virginia from Mac Baren (can't wait to see this one in ten year's time... yum yum)

Capstan Blue flake is a huge favorite of mine. I also have a couple of jars of PS Luxury Twist and Navy flake and some MacBaron Virginia flake on hand as well. A buddy just gifted me some Rattray Wallace flake and while not a true Virginia flake it is very tasty.

I tell you what. At present I have a tin of Rattray Marlin Flake open. It's about 15 yrs old and it has been a joy this far. The same for similar aged tons of Old Gowrie. You could spend a lifetime simply exploring the flakes of McClelland and be a happy man. Dunhill Flake is very good. Rotary Navy Flake is a favorite that doesn't need a lot of age to enjoy.

It's most assuredly topped, however it's the black cav that adds what some perceive as a syrupy note. The other two legs of the triangle lack the black cav and may be more to your liking.

I'm nowhere near trying them all, but favorites so far:
Capstan either Blue or Gold but a slight nod to Blue

MacBaren Navy Flake

Watch City Cigar's Old Dominion (really more of a crumble cake, but listed as flake)

I like a lot of them, but Capstan Blue is my favorite.

Peter Stokkebye's Luxury Twist, Navy, and Bullseye flake: I don't know if they're my favorite per se, but I certainly find myself reaching for them when loading up a comfort bowl.

Aylesbury Luxury Flake, Wessex Campaign, and Gawith Best Brown could keep me happy for a long time.
