For $20, I could buy most of two tins of a list of blends I find interesting. Anyone tried Barling Tradition? It's

full strength and sounds like it could be good. If you smoke it, maybe review it. Or James J. Fox Bankers with

cigar leaf. Captain Earle's Honor Blend. So many blends, so little time. I'd rather sample around among what's

current.

I've been buying a few old tins simply out of curiosity to see what all the noise is about. It also provides what I hope will be a memorable first smoke in a new pipe. Ordinarily I'd simply bust a champagne bottle against it in a formal pipe naming ceremony, but while pipes can take a great deal of abuse, the force of a thick bottle does damage. And so a vintage tin of tobacco will have to suffice.

I agree there are blends that maybe fall into the category of 'it was all we had' back in the day. However, the mighty have always their good stuff to fill the silver chalice, so to speak.
The oldest tobacco I have tried is 1979 Mac Baren Scottish mixture, but it was a DELIGHT. I am not sure just how far back one can go with tobacco, but I am sure the "Good stuff" from 1937 is pretty darned good.
I just don't know if it is $400 good. But if one thinks it is, more power to them and maybe they will share at the next pipeclub meeting! LoL!

I've only bought one tobacco on consignment that was old- 4 oz of Redwood, still in the original vacuum-packed bag. It was 10 years old and had changed a great deal but I've never liked its taste, and it sits on the shelf. In general I can't see paying more than 2 or 3 Xs the original price, and it's not something that I plan to do again until I'm rich and famous.
