Two people playing at the same time and only Mario appears to be on the screen. The cartridge is on the table. There are no cables coming out of the back of the console. The console power isn't on. The cartridge/console don't appear to have been beaten half to death and blown on incessantly to make the game work

Very good, although you are missing one. The picture might be a bit too small though.

As for the cartridge/console cleaning, the problem was always the front loading spring system not the cartridges.

That doesn't look like a NES cartridge to me. Too small. More like Super NES size.
