I agree with all the post here, get a decent briar 40 to 60 bucks... You can always go to a B&M, mine here in San Jose let you sample a bowl of their blends before you buy!!! Also they have opened tins to sample!! Not sure how other stores do it, I'd imagine there the same

Eh... I sort-of half agree in general, I guess.
If you don't try cheaper pipes/tobaccos, then you tend not to realize how much better the pricey stuff can be. I smoked Captain Black and various, drug-store aromatics for a year or so before I set foot in a tobacconist's. I learned about tongue-bite and how to keep lit on my own. I got pretty much everything I could get out of a Grabow and CB. When I finally bought a decent briar and good, fresh, quality tobacco, I was able to really appreciate the difference. I suppose my advice would be to try a little of what smells good to you and don't break the bank on a pipe. Now, if money isn't as tight at the moment - go directly to a shop and talk with the tobacconist. Buy a pipe that feels good in the hand and ask if you can sample (or buy a sampler pack/kit of) different blends and smoke a few bowls. Find a couple you like, a pouch and a tamper and smoke up. I actually didn't smoke at all before I started with the pipe, so I didn't need a nic nuke. I tried six or eight blends a week for a while - but my tobacconist let me sample for free, so...ymmv. You may enjoy a heavy English blend more than a typical 'cherry' blend, etc. No two smokers have the same nose/tongue, really...

Above all, take your time with it. It usually takes me a solid hour to smoke - never rush it. Rushing f--ks sh-t up.

Following the white rabbit
Unlike many here, I am a big fan of Dr Grabow pipes, I just remove the filter. I think they are a good starter pipe simply because they aren't very expensive, are easily obtainable, and I find that they are reliable smokers. Although I own many "better" pipes, I enjoy smoking my Dr Grabows and will smoke at least one of them nearly every day.
Also, if you want to spend a tad more, you really can't go wrong with a Peterson system pipe as they tend to be a little more forgiving of the typical beginner packing and smoking mistakes and you're far less likely to have to deal with gurgling in your pipe.
As for tobacco, just try some different ones and see what appeals to you. Don't overlook the "drugstore" blends like Captain Black White Label, Half & Half, Prince Albert, and others. Walnut is good if you can find it. In my experience, among those types of blends there is a difference between the pouches and the tubs. I find the tubs to be better, but you may just want to try a pouch of various ones until you find what you like and then get a tub of it (them).
As for differences between types, some simplified definitions:
English Blend refers to traditional Latakia blends, but is also used as a more generic term to mean a non-aromatic blend.
Aromatic refers to blends that have added flavorings such as vanilla, cherry, rum, etc. This adds both flavor and room note that is not natural tobacco.
There are many, many others, but that is the essential difference between aromatic and non-aromatic blends.
Spending some time Googling the various terms and blend types can be very educational.

The Matrix
Get yourself a nice cob pipe from MM corncorbs.com I think, they have models called county gent and General (bigger bowl) but they smoke like dreams for

Under $10./each and Jake Hackert makes some of them a little nicer with oak shanks

And vulcanite Stems for $25 (worth it, I have two of his generals that are killer and I smoke them day-in/out)
Also for bacci, esp. Since new and ur tech of smoke'in isn't there yet, I would grab some mild/med English

As they tend not not bite you (burn your mouth) as a straight Virginia or some Aromatics will if you heat them

Up too much ( all about sugar levels in the bacci) I love Low Country Cooper (med English) from smokingpipes.com it is Grrrrreat :)
