Somebody used a torch to light his pipe and was rather careless in hitting the mark with the flame.

I see that the stem looks remarkably unscathed! (?)

The pipe is beautiful as is, but I can't imagine you couldn't top it like the guys @ newbornpipes do, easily, and that it would still be a prize. Either way, a great acquisition and a pipe to hold in comfort.

The color is fantastic! The grain is amazing. The blast. The contrasts. The hand shaping. This is a gem.

Congratulations!!

Allen it has seen battle, you picked it up from the Char field, and it is a trooper, well done my man, a well scared trooper. Don't have to be pretty to be a good smoker.

A battle worn Chonowistch - Emil or pers - who the hell cares?
This pipe is lovely. And I'm with Bradley and Trailboss. It's been used, abused and tattooed. You like the way it smokes? Good on you, pal. Want to make it prettier, good on you pal.
Our friend, Mike, offered up a great old soldier and you ran with it.
Well done, Allan.

A persons ability to buy fine art.......... has nothing to do with their ability to appreciate it. He probably got what he paid for.

An attempt to impress folks. You have the Treasure, much abused previously, but now much loved. Congratulations on a wonderful decision.

Lighting a pipe with a Bic lighter will do that over time.
I remember years ago, reading an article about Jerry Lee Lewis in Smoke magazine. They interviewed him as a pipe smoker and all of this pipes in the article pictures had the same charred rim burn caused by lighting with a Bic.
I do not use a Bic for that very reason.
Show some after pictures of your pipe, looking forward to a few pics of the rejuvenation.

Over the last 9 years, I've lit probably 85% of my pipes with a Zippo, 14% with matches, and maybe 1% with a Bic. None of my pipes have anywhere near the sort of abuse that this thing does.
There are a few Heeschens on smokingpipes that look similarly abused. Just baffling to me how careless some people can be.

Nothing wrong with using Bics if you've got a brain in your head. I've been lighting my pipes with them for 15 years and have no rim burn whatsoever. Don't blame the product for operator error.

It's like if they're trying to light a pipe with no hands and no depth perception.

Even though I wear a shirt and tie to work every day, my sophistication in dress would rival Red Skelton's tramp in his old tv series, at least according to my wife and daughter.
Having said that, the looks of this Emil Chonowitsch really have no meaning to me.
This thing smokes great-its light and a great clencher.
I love this pipe.
Once in a while, you luck out. It was my turn.

Anyone remember the pipes from the P&T article on Jerry Lee Lewis? Every one of his pipes looked the same. Fried on one side of the rim like it was done on purpose. Some folks just don't care as long as the tobacco gets lit I guess.

Well, that pipe was enjoyed. Apparently the smoker was careless, but he certainly savored his leaf. I guess

when you buy a pipe, and smoke it to enjoy it, the wear is part of the deal. Most of us want to show a little

more knowhow and respect, especially with a fine pipe. But here, the enjoyment is clear. So I shake my head,

but I figure it's the pipe smokers prerogative.
