I'm a newby to pipes, so I don't have a good feel of what is a good price vs what is a silly price. So is a Vauen Regent pipe worth $150 new? Or is that a clueless newby would make?
Thanks!

Hi Pleadies,
They sell for about a 100 Euros here in Germany.
German site
I always buy a pipe I have held in my hands and I like, it really dosen't matter who it's made by or what it costs. I have never bought one on-line. Shop around a bit and with §150 in your pocket you will find yourself a great pipe.

pleidades, I would reflect a little on the filter aspect of Vauen. Nothing wrong with it if you specifically

want a filter. You might try both filtered and unfiltered Missouri Meerschaums to see the difference and

learn if you want to start with a filtered pipe. I would shop a lot of pipes, some in person if possible, to

get the idea of what is available. It seems to me it is easier to start with an unfiltered pipe, and maybe

relatively mild tobaccos, and go from there, but that's just my opinion.

Most of the smokers here can buy any pipe as an Estate because they know pipes. I don't so I agree with Billy/Deutschland and I need to hold them, feel them, & then buy them.

Vauens are FANTASTIC pipes! I own several and they are of exceptional German craftsmanship - the drilling is precise to the last nanometer. If they were more readily available in North America, I'd have a MUCh larger collection.
Re: Filter ... all Vauen pipes come with an insert that precisely fits the tenon and mortise, such that you have a choice of either using a filter, or the insert (makes it a filter-less pipe).

Never tried them but nice looking. What's that white spot doing there? Dunhill envy?

Instead, VAUEN has a longer pipe making history than Dunhill does.

According to Pipedia:
In the 1920s, VAUEN had taken out a trademark on a white dot on the mouthpiece for Germany and Austria, at the same time that Dunhill had done the same for the international market. The companies ended up in court with the result that Dunhill may use the white dot internationally, whereas VAUEN may use it only in Germany and Austria and has to use a differently-coloured dot for all other markets. They have used light blue and grey dots internationally since then. The white or coloured dot denotes the higher quality pipes of VAUEN; the lower-end pipes are only marked by the VAUEN imprint on the stem.

Pretty amazing pipe makers will go to court over a simple dot on the stem lol but if it's felt

It's trademark... Makes sense to.

I have five Vauen pipes and they're all great.
If you don't like the filter just don't use it, I never use the adapter either so I still wonder why they make them in the first place.

I do like to use pipe cleaners in the filter slot to keep tobacco bits out of my mouth and reduce gurgle.

You have to hand it to the Germans to make quality stuff at a fair price. If you compared a Vauen pipe to pipes of the same price range made by other producers, you will see the obvious quality difference.

I have 1 Vauen pipe, purchased it estate and it is a great smoker. I like 9mm filter and slowly I am moving towards having all my pipes, except MM, to be 9mm

The Dunhill vs. Vauen dispute over the use of the dot trademark reminds us of how large and therefore competitive the tobacco pipe market was at one time. That's the explanation (I think) for all the various stingers, carburetors, systems, filters and other unique characteristics on pipes that don't seem necessary. There was a gold rush to get customers to buy a particular brand of pipe and feel only that pipe could deliver the enjoyment sought. Many of these patented and trademarked pipes are still with us in one form or another.

I'm of the same opinion. I like a very wide open draw, and some of my favorite pipes are filtered. Just remove the filter and it's perfect. The adapters make no sense to me and appear to serve only to constrict the draw.
