Hi Mr Fnord in answer to your question I'm only saying when that factory varinsh coating is gone it seems pretty hard a task to get it back to original shape, somewhat impossible, I can have the surface polished to satisfactory point, although, after a smoking they tend to turn back matt' again, Just like here the Dunhill pipe pic. shows, similair thing happened with my brand Savinelli pipe and no hope to get the shine back using a regular carnauba wax, yes I'm from northern europe-Finland.And have a Great weekend Y'all, Paul

Getting back to this pipe, I'd say something was wrong with it. Was this sold to you as a new Dunhill? As such there is no way a smooth finish pipe should be peeling off in your hand after a few smokes, or after a few years. Far less expensive pipes than Dunhills, with a wide variety of finishes, do not peel this way with use. I don't care which layer is involved -- and this looks deeper than just some kind of wax finish. If this was sold as an estate pipe, it is possible that a previous owner added some additional but inappropriate finish. In any case, this shouldn't happen to any pipe of middling quality, and certainly not to a Dunhill. 'Taint right, it just 'taint right.

I don't think this is unusual, personally. I have never owned a Dunhill pipe but I know that on my other pipes (Peterson et al) the polish was blemished after a couple of smokes, particularly in areas where my skin had come into contact with the varnish. Here, it seems that the texture of the wood resulted in an uneven binding of the polish on the pipe. I wouldn't worry too much. I use Savinelli pipe polish on my pipes but with mixed results, heard good things about Halcyon 2. I would try that, as suggested.
EDIT: Actually... Was this kept in a coat pocket while still hot, by any chance? The blemishes look like creases in fabric...

The picture almost looks like certain grains have dried more quickly than the other grains. Your's is not a polished or matte finish any more. I would agree with mso that something isn't right. I would think a fine company like Dunhill would stand behind their product. I would send the pictures to them to see what they have to say. You never know.
