With the stock markets corona shivering all the way down into the cellar i decided to invest my last pesetas in a safe asset that will never be cheaper than it is today. I'm of course talking about pipe tobacco.

Added a bunch of tins to my shopping cart and placed an order with the excellent smokingpipes.com... and thats when Swedish Big Brother wants a word... Sales tax for non EU purchase 25%, Tobacco toll 75%, Tobacco weight tax 5.60 USD per 1 oz, toll expediting fee 7.8 USD... And once again I'm reminded that the only sure things in life are taxes and death and they both seem to be getting bigger these days.

Realized that this post my sound a bit gloomy, not my intention, no gloom here puffy, just some reflections.

That's a great idea. Buy more than you can smoke right now, and then maybe store them all somewhere. I bet that if you don't smoke them all quickly, that the older ones might taste... different. It'll be... like, an experiment. puffy
You may be onto something here.

As much as Sweden seems like it would be a wonderful place to live, those taxes seem to deter me from checking it out further.

I laid in a supply of pipe cleaners (48 bundle box) and a five pack of the Corona (no pun intended) flints. The tobacco took care of itself over the past 3 decades.

I do not intentionally age tobacco; it just accumulates a tin or baggie or two at a time. Apparently I like buying leaf a little more than smoking it. Don't those tins, jars and tubs look pretty all stacked up? Blenders go out of business over time, and suddenly I have rare blends. Why, it's a portfolio.

Insufficient customers means no profit and that, kids, equals risks outweighing profits. Ergo, no smugglers.

I'm not sure I am tracking with you, Warren. Poor Gecko got soaked for over 100% of his purchase price by taxes. Where I live, circumventing overreaching regulation and taxation is something of a cultural past time and Gecko's situation would seem tailor made for "undocumented free market enthusiasts" to develop thriving businesses. Just sayin'...

Cheers,

I made the mistake of checking my stocks just now - yikes I could really go for a nice big bowl right now.

Have tobacco prices really gone down that much lately?

The last 10 days have been an absolute bloodbath. Glad I'm not retiring any time soon. To me, it just means everything is cheap right now. Had to make a few buys this morning in fact.

Actually over 200 %, a tin for 10 USD ends upp costing me over 30 USD with taxes, tolls and fees.

Back when I was a habitual cigar smoker and had a supplier in a tax haven I used to do some civil disobedience import of Cuban cigars ?

I'm with you on that assessment. But I do believe it will take som time for the Corona situation to pass and stocks may become even cheaper.

The stock market here in Stockholm fell 11% just today. And Swedish banks were already extremely cheap before this because of the Russian state organized false flag attack on them led by Bill Browder this past year.

They certainly may. That's why I didn't necessarily buy everything I was scoping out this morning, only some, haha.
