Yeah I have always wondered how to explain the taste of perique. I find alot in an english blends it gives latakia a less smoky campfire flavor and more of a leather/peppery taste. In Elizabethan Mixture(va/per)and Essence of Vermont(aromatic) in produces a flat, musty-raisin taste which reminds me for some reason the funny taste I get from food when I have the flu.

Wow, thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate it.
I haven't figured out any rhyme or reason behind it but I find that I can always get them to sing if I smoke a blend containing Latakia just beforehand.
I read that before from a post of yours hawky, and I tried that. Unfortunately, didn't work for me.

The only Va/Per I've tried was Irish Oak which I believe also has a good dose of Burley in it. All I taste for sure is the Virginia. I read on this site that Virginia is a tobacco type that requires experience to get the most out of it in the smoke. One piece of advice was to smoke it exclusively for six months or so. Maybe by taking that advice, the subtle differences with varying amounts of Perique may come through. I know one thing for sure - too much Latakia can burn out taste buds and turn the taste of everything into ash.

Escudo, SG ST James Flake, Haddo's Delight. If you cannot taste them, might be time to switch to cigars.
I enjoy cigars on special events mostly, Harris. The interesting thing is my taste buds have improved significantly after starting pipe smoking. I can taste cigars better than ever right now thanks to pipe hobby. I guess I need more time to feel the taste of Va/Pers. Actually I enjoy smoking Va/Pers and I really like the after taste.

Va/Pers are a little more subtle to my palate. I actually really enjoyed Savinelli Doblone d'Oro because it's a VaPer with some extra stuff thrown in that adds a little more flavor.
It's interesting, cigars actually taste "less" than stronger pipe tobacco to me. Their aroma is much more intense, and the room note more dominating, but sometimes when I draw the smoke into my mouth, I don't taste it as much as I would a more robust pipe tobacco blend.

I find the aroma of many cigars delightful but when it comes to the taste it seems that the aroma doesn't come through. I don't mind some cigar leaf in my pipe tobacco as long as it isn't the dominant flavor.
I find Virginia forward pipe tobacco blends can often taste cigarettish, for now I will avoid the Va/Pers.

Mark Ryan's 1881 perique and madura sticks
I suspected it was a question of finding the right cigar. I'm the same with wine, I say I don't like it but the fact is I never bother to write down the names of the good ones when I try them and they remain lost to me forever.
@Cosmic
I'll take your word on these cigars and give them a try as soon as the opportunity arises.

Those 1881 Perique's look pretty cool indeed. I've actually been looking for some interesting cigar offerings for my little pipe/cigar club!
