There are professional places in the USA that sell used lighters of Dunhill and ST Dupont build, and new. And are doing it for more then what some mebers in europe are selling their used lighters for on this website.
But, I can find fakes of either style on ebay and amazon, for the same price as sold by those professional dealers and on here by members.

SO what I am curious is, is it even worth it to try to get a real one anymore. Or is a crappy clone from china more then sufficient

Even been looking at dunhill rollalite, but even those are priced like a rollagas if it is known to be working, or just CLEAN.

dirtied up, corroded and just nasty are priced less then most of the rollagas clones for sale on ebay.

What's the point? If it's worth whatever the price is to you, buy one. If not, don't. Whether there are "fakes" out there is irrelevant because they are . . . . fakes.

I'd never knowingly buy a counterfeit lighter, or anything for that matter. Companies and individuals work very hard to establish a good name and reputation and buying be counterfeit is just encouraging dishonesty and supporting illegal activity. Look around, good deals are available. Why buy knockoff? If you desire the quality and reputation of a product, buying a knockoff is not obtaining the desired quality or reputation. Some claim the knockoffs are quality but to me, it's supporting and encouraging dishonesty and harming the hard work of others. I'd rather have a genuine Bic or Zippo than a knockoff DuPont or Dunhill.

I know that when I sell Duponts the price is very good compared to the US.

In France I can get better deals on non working models and repair them. It allows me to pass on the savings to buyers. While there are Ligne 1 fakes there are WAAAY more ligne 2 knockoffs. Also Ligne 1 lighters are older. Most the cheap knock offs are dead by now. Fakes will generally weigh less as they have plastic tanks.

I love Duponts and there is nothing about them that is cheap or feels cheap. I think the real thing is worth it (at used prices...new prices are really crazy).

The knockoff Dupont L1s that you have to watch out for are relatively new.
They started showing up alongside knockoff Soubreny models about five years ago. I made an old post about them here when I saw them. Not sure if they have metal monoblock or plastic tanks, or how they compare in weight, but...

...traditionally the knockoff L2s generally weigh more than their authentic counterparts by about half an ounce. They both have solid one-piece monoblock tank/bodies, but the fakes use a heavy milled plug at the top instead of the light sandcast piece that you would find in the authentic version. That's true for the older-construction L2 models. Those fakes end up overweight & top-heavy, & probably with a little less gas capacity. I can't speak for the newer-construction L2 authentic or knockoff versions, with the seam at the bottom.
