But, I’m just a nerd about this stuff. Beer is still a new beverage, but I won’t argue against this new history being propelled by the Craft Movement. It’s like fighting a tidal wave with a boat oar. But, if one is interested, check out the history of mead making. There’s a lot of older books that have great information. Meads were the oldest and mots prolific beverage in the world, despite their false association with Vikings. Meads were worldwide, and still a major part of sone Middle Eastern and Eastern cultures.

Being raised in in the foothills of the Smokys, it’s always been a joke to think the Scots Irish didn’t drink, regardless of the religion. Some think Jesus turned the water into grape juice.
Cultures that were anti drinking, just did their drinking away from their families. Sort of like when the US was anti-pot, which just meant people smoked it in hiding.

No harm. I know you’re going to argue about something.....???

And, up until 100 years ago, there was no legal age limit. For 8000 years kids drank alcohol with their families. But, up until the import of sugars, wines were mostly 3-4% abv. Wild yeast strains were/are rather weak in their abv tolerances. So, the wine was thick, chewy, and rather low alcohol, just enough to prevent fruit spoilages.

All this is very interesting. My family has a LONG history of making spirits around Fairborn, Ga. we have the prison stripes to prove it. When I was a young lad (19-20) in the north Ga. mountains, we drank far more shine than beer. Wine was for women and beer was for Yankees. Real men drank liquor.

It seems that one or more of the Egyptian digs dating back between 3,000 to 5,000 years ago found what turned out to be fermenting containers, and when they sent to residue to a lab for analysis, turned out to be the ingredients for something very close to beer (though I don't think Egypt had hops growing anywhere near).

I read somewhere about the use of tobacco in my new state of Alabama. I come from father upstream where the French Broad and Holston Rivers form the Tennessee River that extends down into Northern Alabama.

Anyway, here is some interesting information.
Study finds older use of tobacco than previously thought - The Cherokee One Feather | The Cherokee One Feather (theonefeather.com)
Tobacco has been cultivated in North America for over 12,000 years.

Hmm.. So, now the question becomes did our ancestors settled down to grow barley for beer, or tobacco for smoke. It's like egg or chicken now.
glad someone else understands this. Food is everywhere and a pain in the ass to grow. Drugs or things that make drugs make way more sense to stop and start farming for. (think about it while it might be easier to grow food then to follow food, well not on your first go through not when farming is experimental.)

There is a Niel Gow fiddle tune I play named, “Farewell to Whiskey “ from 1799 when the barley crop failed and the leaders said it had to be used for bread snd not whiskey.
