I resisted concluding that I have an intolerance to Latakia. I blamed my chemical mouth burn on side effects to medications. I continued to buy and jar great blends of English tobacco, which I love. But I finally went back to trying some straight Virginias and even some aromatics and: problem solved. I’m depressed. I don’t want to throw all this stuff away. How could this be? Maybe it will resolve itself if I return to the English blends some time in the future? Sad.

I have had bad experiences with a couple of blends and smoked them no issue months down the line after staying away. It may be your current body chemistry.

Kind of like how some people say they taste “soap” in Lakelands and all Burley blends taste bitter or cigarette like. I have seen some people attribute tastes and smells in tobacco reviews that conflict with the popular consensus or are foreign to my experiences.

Apparently a number of people smoke blends that taste like old ladies purses and granny panties.

I never had an intolerance but I did avoid Latakia for the last 8 months and I have started to smoke some old favorites after assessing the unorganized mason jar situation in my closet.

I have enjoyed some blends more now than I previously did. So many Latakia blends taste similar to me. There are about 8 or so I enjoy that I have cellared. I have narrowed down my over all blend preferences and mostly smoke the same dozen blends with others as a change of pace.

Revisit the Latakia down the road and see if it agrees with you, if not , there are still hundreds of blends to choose from to smoke.

Could be an allergy to something used in latakia production? One of the woods/bushes/herbs they use to smoke the tobacco. I'd try laying off of it for a while and then coming back to it, maybe trying a light latakia blend at first before something with more lat in it.
Some people seem to have a sensitivity to red virginias, so I suppose a latakia sensitivity is possible as well. That's really a bummer, man. I guess I'm lucky that I haven't run into any tobaccos that disagree with me.

I have recently decided that Virginia blends taste superior to me than most English tobaccos for a non-aromatic. I only crack a jar of English once in a while now days. Maybe jar all your englishes and do the same with a few... if your intolerance goes away, great. If not, I'm sure you can find someone here who would like to relieve you of your aged tobacco for some sort of compensation.

My variable chemistry tolerance is for perique, sometimes it absolutely the most fantastic thing in my life, sometimes it's like acid. Jars and waiting let me select the best times to smoke it.

That is a bummer but look at it this way, at least you aren’t allergic to all tobacco. Lots of good Virginias, burleys and aros out there. I would just keep the English to the side and try again every few months. Hopefully it’ll work its way out of you. Or you could send them off to @sardonicus87!

I’m enjoying Wilke Rum and Maple right now. Point you ask? My wife says it doesn’t smell good out here on the deck. She loves the smell of heavy Latakia based blends because that is what her Dad and Grandpa smoked. Her Dad used to correspond with and order a Latakia you can’t get any more from a guy in New York who supplied him for years. That’s all he smoked until he couldn’t get it any more.

There are blends with Latakia in them I like a lot but I pulled out something the other day with just too much and not good. A few months ago I liked it fine - so who knows …… come back to some and you may be surprised.

But discovery of Virginias was an eye opener for me and now that I can appreciate aros much more than I did even one year ago has allowed me to hone in a bit on the ones I know I like but I still hop from blend to blend like a randy rooster pheasant!

FYI, just found out for the first time my great grandfather smoked a pipe. My hazy memories of him as a wee lad were of him rolling his own smokes - apparently he was a SRW guy.

I just really love latakia and I lost the taste for virginias. I smoked some Dunhill flake yesterday and it tasted like cigarettes to me (but no bite!). I think, and maybe you'll advise me as such, that I just need to develop my palatte to start enjoying virginias. I know Dunhill flake is quality and, if I take my time, I should find the flavor there. Last night I did enjoy an aro: Bagpiper's.
But I just love the English stuff.
I'm in Japan and it's really hard to ship tobacco out of Japan so sorry folks! I know. I tried to do it and Japan Post just refused. I know someone here who will gladly take them off my hands. Maybe I'll wait though.

When I smoke latakias, they immediately feel hot on my mouth and leave my tongue and the roof of my mouth burned for days.

Kind of unusual, this sensitivity to Latakia. Most times, sensitivities are to Virginias and aromatics and occasionally Burleys. It may be the draw rate, getting the tobacco too hot and frying you. Wet tobacco will also surely give a sort of 'steam' burn. Try a different pipe and slowly sip to see if that helps. Best of luck!

That doesn’t sound right.
Which Latakia blends are causing such a violent reaction?

Latakia gives me a very strange mouth feel. A tingly numbness. Super subtle but occasionally I notice it without looking for it. I don't have any issue with it but I imagine that if it does that I could see it having a reaction that's stronger with other people.
Hey I love nasal snuff too but most scent otherwise then straight florals and weak menthol make my sinuses freak out. We can't always enjoy the things we enjoy. And I hate to be the one to tell you this, but if you eat cake everyday you'll get fat.

Uh huh, I wish.
Caveat unless you're Embers. Who will only get fat if he pays an unethical plastic surgeon to do reverse lipo. And caveat on that statement unethical by the professional standards of that industry. You know an industry that considers looking your age having unaugmented ta tas or an ethnically (any of the ones found on earth) identifiable nose to be medical conditions that require surgical interventions.
