Once again it is time to work up our concentration, pack our bowls carefully, strike our matches and smoke! The Second Annual Midwest Regional Slow Smoke is happening again at the North American Society of Pipe Collectors 2025 Sell/Swap/Show! This is a United Pipe Clubs of America Regional which means the winner of the contest will win a seat at the 2026 National Pipe Smoking Contest in Chicago.

What is a Slow Smoke? For the uninitiated it is simply a contest where every participant gets the same exact pipe, tobacco, two matches and a tamper. What they will then do is get a set amount of time to prepare the tobacco and pack their bowl. At the moment the timer starts they have one minute to use one or both of their matches to light their bowl. With some minor rules such as the pipe must be in your mouth while tamping and not drinking anything for the first ten minutes you then smoke until the last smoker has gone out. That last smoker? They are the winner and will be awarded the coveted Midwest Regional Slow Smoke Trophy and a free seat at the United Pipe Clubs of America National Contest with a chance there to compete to represent The United States at the World Cup of Pipe Smoking in 2026 in Italy.

After some long and hard thinking on the blend, we are going with Dunhill Early Morning Pipe.(I still can’t call it Peterson -AT) The pipe is an Olde West made by Tim West Apple with Length 14.5 cm Height 4.5 cm Depth 3 cm Diameter 2cm dimensions. This event will take place just prior to the show floor opening. The contest is at 4pm on Friday August 8th which is right before the show! As an added bonus everyone that participates in the contest gets free admission to the North American Society of Pipe Collectors 2025 Sell/Swap/Show! I mean admission is already free to all but I figured I would mention it anyway!

So all are welcome and seats are selling quickly. Sign up with Andre Tessier at AndreTNY@gmail.com. Directions for payment will be emailed to you upon signing up. The cost for the contest is $55.IMG_5599.jpegIMG_5600.jpeg

Just one final question: the entry fee includes the pipe, right? Or do I have to purchase the pipe separately to participate? (I'm a n00b with regards to these competitions, so please forgive me if it's obvious to everyone else!)

Yes indeed. The entry fee includes not only the pipe, but also a tamper and 3 grams of EMP. You also get 2 matches, but you have to give any unused ones back after the light up. LOL You can borrow a pipe cleaner. Also water and a cup is provided after 10 minutes.
