A while ago @burleybreath asked about matches having little tiny ember bits flying off when struck. Everyone was like that's you. Well I bought some more Diamond matches and the head is a darker green then it was before and they're doing the thing he described them doing. It seems like they changed something in the matches. They strike easier then they did before but also send off little sparks pretty consistently now.

I don't think that the individuals technique matters regarding how many sparks you get. Some matches just suck probably?

I’ve noticed more flying bits lately too, along with matches that don’t light well or at all with one strike.

Swan Vestas used to work great but, alas, not so much anymore.

Shrinkflation sucks.

I'm new to smoking, so my match game is not up to snuff. I find safety matches don't stay lit for long with me, I use kitchen matches. On a different note, reading about Arctic explorers lighting their pipes with a single match in negative degree weather is more impressive now that I've had semi cold Ohio winds blow out my matches.

On the weekend I visited a friend only to find that I forgot to bring a lighter.
My friend gave me a box of matches.
Sitting outside there was barely a breeze yet the matches were hard to keep from blowing out.
Even though I waited for the initial flare to die down before lighting the tobacco, it left an unpleasant taste.
The experience reminded me why I use a lighter.
Matches suck.

Not to be that guy, but Diamond makes the cheapest matches around, and you get what you pay for. They're meant to light your wife's Yankee Candles and stuff like that. They are fragile, overly susceptible to humidity, and like many major brands, find ways to become worse every year to save on production costs. The best advantage they have is that they are cheap and available in bulk. If they work for you, then great! They can work well in a jiffy. But I honestly don't know why any pipe or cigar smoker would choose to light with a cheap match. It makes the tobacco taste like shit, and they are frustrating to work with. The difference in price between a good box of matches and a cheap one is a few bucks tops.

If you think "Eco-friendly" matches are bad, you should try "eco-friendly" toilet rolls
All I can say is they are only fit to be flushed
eco friendly straws in landlocked parts of the world are the best "hope these plastic straws don't make it up the nostrils of a sea turtle" Says some guy in AZ. Unless there is an ocean I don't know about between here and the dump I think the sea turtles are safe SMH....

Haven't noticed an increase in the bits of embers flying off, I have noticed that the striker panel on the box will no longer last an entire box of matches.
I’ve noticed that, too. Sometimes when I’m determined to use the last half of a box of matches, I’ll start them with a lighter, which probably looks fussy and awkward.

Which brand of matches do you suggest? I really don't use matches, but would like to know. Seems like most preferred brands are going away.

Not too sure why, but all the "Eco-friendly" or "made with re-cycled materials" toilet paper I've tried = abysmal quality.
I can't see any valid reason why it is so.
Toilet paper has to be soft yet strong without leaving ton of lints. Yeah, one of those things I'm rather picky about.
