I myself think they are over rated and priced. Nothing against the pipe pictured,
Wow Foggy, that is stunning. I can see why you pulled the trigger on that one. I always get a kick out of it when people say a Dunhill is overpriced. That, of course, is their opinion -- and they're entitled to their own opinion, but they're not entitled to their own facts, and that fact is that Dunhills by and large are fantastic pipes, both in form and function. The same folks probably think that a Porsche 911 is "overpriced". Most people who drive one have a different view. There is no doubt you are paying in part for the name, but there's a reason why the name has value. The same goes for Dunhill.

Thanks for the comments. Dunhills may be overpriced a bit, but they are available new, for less, from European dealers. I think they are worth what they cost over there. I also like that, like Leica film cameras, they increase in value with age. The taste of the smoke is determined to a considerable extent by the stain. The stain they use on the root briars is extraordinarily good. It covers the woody taste of briar and adds something which goes well with many tobaccos. I have the first several smokes of the day with root briars. It doesn't matter to me what the label says, as long as it was produced in the same factory, to the same standards as earlier Dunhills. I have tried the octagon pipe today and it smoked well the first time, which means a great pipe later on.
