Steve, unsmoked means unsmoked, ie never ever been smoked, not even once. Also you say it was advertised as BNIB but you never got the box.
If your pipe has indeed been smoked then, that along with the missing box, I personally would take it up with the seller. You have been diddled irrespective of how much or how little you paid for it.
You might only get a handful of dollars back but that could be spent on baccy :puffy:
Nice pipe by the way.
Regards,
Jay.

Thanks, Jay. I did contact him, and am withholding feedback until he responds. Hopefully he is cool, but life's too short if he's not, and I'll move on...more baccy does sound good though.

... initial post says it's a prince ... I'm often posting on the fly ... will try to read more closely and re-read before I post again. It's a beauty, not unsmoked, but a fine pipe.

What are people's take on that? Thanks!
By the looks of it... I would use a magic eraser first and see how much of the oxidation comes off. You may be satisfied after that? If not, you can use some micro mesh and that should do the trick as far as removing the oxidation. You can then use the obsidian oil, but if you want it to shine you'll need to buff it a little on a wheel with some white diamond followed by some carnauba. This is my take. Cheers!

I hate dishonesty and agree with you fighting on that front. But you'd be remiss to let that sweet little prince out of your clutches now. Oxidation on a stem is a pretty minor problem that is easily remedied. Forgetting the lies for a moment, sweet find!

Has anyone used a dremel polishing wheel/bit on a vulcanite pipe stem? I've used them on cellulose (slow and careful, it can catch fire) and plastic straight razor scales, but not sure about vulcanite. Thanks.

"Has anyone used a dremel polishing wheel/bit on a vulcanite pipe stem?"
Please forget this idea...it will end in tears no matter how careful you are.
Even on the slowest speed setting the Dremel is spinning way too fast for that kind of task. You will likely end up with a whole load of wavy lines or 'smears' all over the stem.
If you have no micro-mesh at hand a gentle hand polish with Colgate toothpaste or Barkeeper's Friend kitchen cleaner should improve matters.
Let us know how you get on chum :puffy:

Jay.

Could just be a bowl coating in that pipe. Looks like the new ones on SP have a black interior -

Stems oxydize super fast in UV light. If that pipe was in store front or something, that would totally explain it.
I think it's a new pipe, just a little care-worn.

Sasquatch may have hit the nail on the head. It could well be that. And the box missing - well, depends on what you feel. I have a Dunhill box or two but only because I am reluctant to throw stuff out.

I believe that dunhill use a bowl stain.I had a unsmoked bowl that i was not sure if it was genuine.I wiped the inside with, some alcohol and it came off on the cloth in a sort of purple color.I was advised this was correct,.That bowl was from 1984 not sure if this applies to your later pipe.

If it had been smoked I would expect a black sooty residue on the cloth.

It turned purple...
Does that mean in pregnant? I guess it was in smoked! Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to get a magic eraser or two and see how the stem looks.
