Eventually after getting used to the way they actually taste, you're brain will decode these smells that you are having an initial repulsion to, into the way they'll taste.
Kind of like drinking beer, come to think of it. At first, it tastes like fermented squash. Later, pure beauty. Miraculous transformation!

I suppose it was only a matter of time afore the troll AKA Cosmic (along with his astonishing lack of geographic knowledge) plunged yet another thread into a chaotic diatribe of claptrap. Some folk need to understand that it is perhaps for the better if they don't get out of bed of a morning.
So it appears the consensus has shifted from Latakia to Turkish, we are slowly getting there. Anymore candidates?

Cosmic is a valued contributor around here. (Perhaps this means only: I consider him a valuable writer, information source and personality. He's worth reading, even when he sh!tposts.)
Latakia tastes like cheese and fermented testicle sweat. I love it nonetheless, in measured dosages.
What was the topic again?

But yes, I agree strongly with what Cosmic said about smells not necessarily translating to the smoke, especially not a 1:1 correspondence. A lot of times, if there is a good tobacco under the topping and condiments (latakia, perique, etc.), it will come out during the smoke quite strongly, and even if you don't like the aroma initially, it will produce an enjoyable smoke.
But not everyone likes everything, of course! Except me. I'm pro-latakia, perique, Lakeland essence, sweety-sweet American aromatics, and blistering UK ropes.

Bigpond, I have never tried dark fired Kentucky though I would certainly like to.
As regards my SL, I had another bowl today and was conciously trying to separate the different flavours in my mind. The 'offending flavour' does peter out from mid bowl onwards where it becomes almost pleasurable. Perhaps whatever flavour it is I can only bear it in small amounts.
One thing I have noticed about all the blends I have tried thus far is that darker blends seem to suit my palate more than pale ones. Odd is that!

Jay, DFK and latakia are both smoked cured. The pine tar and tannic oak notes latakia picks up in the smoking process are absent in DFK. If you're reacting to those aromas DFK may work for you as you may pick up some of the depth without the BO. Irish Flake is a great dark blend, as is Sam's Flake. There are many from Gawith and Hoggarth's too.

 
At first, I was very put off by latakia blends, but because of the campfire smell. That and my wife said that a few of them smelled like burning tires in the house. So, after turning back to Virginias and VaPers for a few years, I have finally found a few latakia blends that I can smoke in the winter. But, in the summer, I want sweet and savory Virginias and VaPers that will not dry my mouth out. But, as soon as it gets cold, I don't mind a smokey latakia with which to walk the dogs.

Many people are put off by latakia. I wouldn't worry about it. This is why there are literally thousands of different blends. Just find a genre that you like and explore that area for a while. Who knows, maybe you'll come full circle and like latakias latter on. Sometimes, it helps to learn as much about the different leafs components as possible, and exploring can help. YMMV

Bill, I always thought the reason wine was decanted was to leave the lees in the bottle thereby leaving just good wine to drink :oops:

Cosmic, others have compared Latakia to a campfire smell, alas I got no campfire smell from any of the above mentioned blends, just BO :evil:
Shame I don't know any pipesmokers, otherwise I could give them the tin of SL to sniff.

My pleasure! I love the stuff but mind it does have a touch of tonquin.

Bigpond, I was 'warned' about tonquin in 1792 blend but smelled absolutely nothing in the tin and tasted very little of anything in the smoke, quite bland really.
Coniston Cut Plug, now that was a different beast altogether!

Scarface, it's actually CORNWALL, the most south western county of England and very rural. As for GH & SG blends, they are available via various internet sellers. Am smoking a new one right now called 'Cabbie's Mixture' and am struggling to like it :|
