Recently P&C listed "University" pipes in their catalog, about 40 year-old pipes found in an estate sale. The pipes are French, and look great in classic simplicity, were reasonably priced, so I pulled the trigger on one. Has anyone had any experience with these pipes, and does age help the taste of a new, unsmoked pipe?

The new version of University Pipes weren't bought at an estate sale. They were bought from a distributor who had purchased them from a factory as unfinished stummels. The size of the pipes (a little smaller than today's standard briars) is the best indicator of the age, which, according to the person who sold them to us, is around 40 years old. The reddish natural color of the stummels bears out that they are made of Algerian briar. They were finished in-house by our staff artisan pipe maker, Dan Chlebove who makes Gabrieli Pipes, just using wax to finish them. They're very light, comfortable and smoke beautifully. I'm confident that you'll enjoy yours.

Much thanks for the inside info! I was apparently mistaken about the estate origins, but hope the stummel isn't too small. Love the notion of just polished wax for the surface, letting one see just pure grain--a simple, classic pipe, down to the essentials. Can't wait to see mine!

I have a wide range of size pipes, but was introduced to smaller pipes by fishnbanjo, pipes which I had previously regarded as souvenirs or toys. They are excellent for short smokes, sampling at pipes shows and shops, and with flake, plug or rope, you can frequently get a full-length smoke with a smaller pipe, 30 minutes or more. They are also excellent for Virginia blends. I now have several Group 1 and 2 pipes, and I enjoy them regularly when the time available and the leaf are right. Oh, also they are good for sampling "full strength" tobacco, to get the lay of the land before you commit to a medium or larger bowl. I wouldn't be without my smaller bowl pipes, along with all my mediums, large and extra large (when I really want to deliberate or do a longer project).

I have frequently admired these pipes and MANY of the others in the P&C stables... wish more of them came in 9mm filter versions! But then again, maybe not... I've already spent my annual pipe allowance through June!!

IMO, thoroughly cured wood will ensure that the moisture and resin in the wood is completely dry -- preventing cracks, and improving absorbancy. I bought a "dead root" briar from Julius Vesz and found the taste to be uniquely nutty and distinctive -- for about 3 or 4 bowls! After that the taste became unremarkable.

Notified that the pipe is on its way--probably be here Friday or Saturday. I hope I can bear the tension.

Got my University Deluxe Pipe today, a standard billiard; in short, this is a terrific pipe. It's everything P&C and Russ up above say it it. It's light, easy to clench, and delivers what I am sure will be a great smoke once it breaks in, which I think will only be a matter of a day or two at most. (My first two smokes were pretty good in their own right.) Nomenclature is clearly stamped, not just with ink, but directly into the wood with the unaffected type UNIVERSITY DELUXE; has a few unfilled pits the size of a sand grain, but these are waxed over so they look like, and are, a natural part of the pipe; don't know if the vulcanite stems are original, but they look brand new and seamlessly attached. Draw is easy and pleasant, and the waxing directly over the attractive grain is well done. This is an ideal no-frills classic pipe, perfect if you want a briar instead of a cob while working at the lawn, gardening, or workbench, or plain just relaxing; with classic slender lines, it holds it's own anywhere. I'm going to get another one or two; another standard billiard, which is, as Russ tells us, is a tad smaller than mediums sized pipes of today (it happens to be the right size that I've been looking for) and the large billiard. They have a nice selection of these pipes, including paneled. Russ, be sure to save some of these for me!

Update: the University pipe broke in without a hitch, which didn't surprise me with a 40+ year old pipe.

Sounds right up my alley. As in, it's a good quality smoking pipe for fairly cheap. I love that!

Some shapes are out of stock, but I think they still have the medium and large billiard and the hex panel. Nice pipes, but I'm saving my "buy" for the pipe show.
