Wow. He did this once before and disappeared from pipe carving for several years before resurfacing and starting over. If you paid by card, open a dispute and be prepared to offer evidence of the transaction, any email between the two of you, and any evidence of his making pipes while giving you the runaround. Your credit card company will claw back the payment.

OP used a debit card as form of payment. Protections are decidedly weaker than credit cards offer, and in the end it’s your bank you have to convince, not Visa or Mastercard.
Right, call your bank's card customer service. Unfortunately, using a debit card exposes you to much weaker protection. But, you can always try.

I wouldn't support these poor business practices no matter how fine a pipe was in the offing, since it may or may not be in the offing. it sounds like this carver has generated more orders than he can fill and is in denial.

One of my favorite artisan carvers sells only in person, only at the state fair and regional pipe show. The deal is face to face, and he doesn't sell any other way. That feels really solid to me, and it gives me good feelings about the carver and his pipes.

If I had any of these pipes with bad associations, I'd sell them or trade them off for store credit, so someone else could own them on a straight-up deal.

As soon as I read the post yesterday, he's the only one I thought of.
Considering he's a serial recidivist when it comes to taking money from people and not delivering, all I can say is:
Cannoy is not a gentleman. He is a shame to this community.

Walt used to be a forum member here years ago. He knows that this forum can hurt of help a pipemaker to some extent. I really do hate to hear that his CS is lacking. I had high hopes for him, as he does beautiful work.
But, as an artist, I can understand that having to split yourself between the making side and the business side sucks. I hate having to deal with the money and CS stuff also. I have considered taking on a manager, so that I can just stay in the realm of making and never have to deal with negotiating prices, asking for money, and stuff. I don't mind the collaborating with the customer part. Just the money aspect.

Having been down for a couple of months with three herniated disks, and not able to lift a hammer, I myself have lost track of requests and potential orders. Now that I can work at the bench, I am left trying to figure out who I was talking to. I am glad that I didn't take any money from them. I would be in Walt's position if I had.
BTW... if anyone was wanting something, I can walk now, and lift a hammer. ;)

Sorry to hear about your back and very glad you're on the mend. Good luck with your catch up!

We've had high hopes for Walt for 20 years now. Oh well.

UPDATE: I did get a refund from Walt Cannoy today 4/25
Good you got a refund but after waiting a long enough period i would have to say they hell with it i'd rather have the pipe i wanted, since the money is technically already spent. He could have at least offered you the choice of an already made pipe and maybe a discount or something, just to make it all right.

Seeing how Walt sells pipes as soon as they are finished. My bet is that he doesn't have any. He puts one on his site, and it is gone before he has even hit save.
