Under-Appreciated Pipe Brands Redux

I have three Amphora pipes that all smoke well, two Canadians and one bulldog. I bought a pipe rack several years ago thinking that I was just getting the pipe rack, but surprisingly it arrived full of Amphora pipes, which I had not previously heard of. Besides the ones that I kept I've cleaned up several and gifted them to my nephews and some of their friends.

Molina, Brebbia, Stanwell, (did someone say Savinelli?) all of these I've heard mentioned on here. Ones that I haven;t heard ever discussed (and I do not own) are... By Skovgaard, Doctors, Grechukhin Design, Il Duca, Jacono, Johs, Lommas, Manduela, PSStudios, Yettis, Yuwiei, 4th Gen, Baraccini, Crown, Grant Batson, John Bull, MacQueen, Vikings, Victors, Knutes, Vermont Freehands, and a whole bunch more on pipe shop websites that NEVER get mentioned here.

I have always admired Neerup pipes for their unique trademark design and the metalwork touches. The designs do look a little front-heavy (big bowl on small stem), and the weight has always seemed a little heavy, but they are lookers, and many owners commend their smoking characteristics. And yes, I think Johs are notably good pipes, light weight for their size and the size of the chambers. I have five or six Johs, and nearly bought another one recently, but went for a different pipe.

Genod are solid pipes. All my Kaywoodies work well and I enjoy my two Parkers.

As far as I know, they were a brother & sister operation, somewhere in London. Towards the end he was making those Danish 'freehand' style pipes but during the 50's-60's he was quietly turning out some very nice traditional shapes.

Huge outfit 'back in the day' knocking out pipes for anybody & everybody. Never hear of them now.

I think Ropp pipes are unique and well made, some of them with legacy bowls from a defunct pipe factory, and some of those with singular horn stems. Just be sure to check the specs on the chambers; some of them are larger than others. Their Etudante series is moderately priced and of sufficient quality if you are building a rotation. France has an established historical pipe industry and has quality above its price points in many cases. France introduced briar as the standard pipe making material and originated many of the shapes we consider traditionally British.

Georg Jensen. I have only one, but from the cake build-up, when I cleaned it out a few months ago, it'd qualify as my most smoked pipe.

I actually just finished cleaning up a Jensen (my first) I got off ebay last week. I've had only two bowls so far but it seems to smoke great. I may keep seeking them out.

I haven't seen Royal Danish mentioned yet. I also have a La Strada that I believe was a Tinderbox offering back in the day. Both smoke very well.

My collection is still growing so my sample size with any brand is no more than one or two pipes. That said, my Molinas are great smokers. I have a very affordable Tsuge that is a favorite and a couple Longchamps I'm very happy with.

Not surprised no one has mentioned Brigham. They fly so far under the radar they are practically on the ground. Well made, fairly priced pipes.

I actually just finished cleaning up a Jensen (my first) I got off ebay last week. I've had only two bowls so far but it seems to smoke great. I may keep seeking them out.

Take a look in the estate pipes section at The Danish Pipe Shop for them.
There is usually a fair selection at reasonable prices.

On Stanwell pricing, for a time, PC was selling them regularly, the brushed rusticated models, for $50 or less. That's when I bought mine. Since then, the prices have drifted upward, as people have gained confidence in the Italian production of the brand. Up

Just purchased a brushed black free hand for $42 from P&C that arrived three days ago. Pretty nice looking pipe. I have yet to smoke it.

I like my Brigham pipes. I’m particularly fond of their straight apple. And, the only filter I actually leave in the pipe. ?‍ Look to add more of these eventually, but I’m having way too much fun buying tobacco ?. Maybe I’m inappropriately picking on Canadian products - but, Brigham is kind of like D.H. Russell belt knives from my perspective. Good quality reasonably priced. ?

Their authentic pipes are good. I’ve been looking for another one, but can only find them listed on overseas online stores…over $100 USD… I got mine around $50. I hope to see those available in states again.

Reggie, I have several Edwards made Benton pipes, sold as Iwan Ries house pipes stamped with their name, and they are Algerian oil cured briar, well made and durable, good looking after thirty or forty years. In general, house pipes are usually good ones. They are moderately priced to capture the new pipe smoker, but they are also selected to be satisfying purchases so the customer will enjoy smoking and come back for more tobacco and maybe another pipe or ten. Today, Iwan Ries is sourcing its pipes from Genod, a good French brand, which was in fact their original source of house pipes back in pre-history. On Stanwell pricing, for a time, PC was selling them regularly, the brushed rusticated models, for $50 or less. That's when I bought mine. Since then, the prices have drifted upward, as people have gained confidence in the Italian production of the brand. I've found them good, open draw, tight fit and finish, handsome renditions of the classic shapes.

Thank you for the brief Edwards history. I haven't read too much about them. I keep these 2 pipes in my truck and backpack. I don't have to risk any of my finer pipes . They were a fleabay find several years ago. Almost gave them away and then I had one of those Zen smokes in one of them and decided to keep them.
