I would agree with the sage advice given here. Don't give up! There is a learning curve that is beyond some people but it will come in time and it is worth it.

@benvierre 7,
Yep, I'd just echo what more experienced pipers here have said. It's hard to appreciate much flavor when you're frantically puffing and worrying about keeping it lit--at least it was for me. When it's dried and packed well and burning smoothly, then you can slow things down and appreciate it.

The best advice I’ve gotten out of the forums is to dry the tobacco. If that has not been clear in this thread yet, dry your tobacco! When I first started, I remember thinking that the producers surely pack the tobacco at the precise moisture level meant for optimal smoking but that’s just not true for the majority of blends out there, however, there are always exceptions to this rule as I prefer several blends straight out of the tin/pouch but until you know how ya like it, you really need to dry your tobacco and then dry it some more. Once you get your first “good” smoke, you’ll be hooked.
But you always have to keep in mind that smoking a pipe may not be your “thing”.

Exactly. And as far as exceptions to that rule--while I'm no expert, when I first opened the brick of Vincent Manil Tabac Semois, I thought "okay, I'm pretty sure this doesn't need a lot more drying time." :D

Oh, and being a relative newbie here, I hate to have to take the low road and engage in the most crude, tasteless humor. However, since nobody else is stepping up, I feel obligated.
In regards to the thread title...unfortunately, that's what she said.
