Just found this site while diddling on the computer and don't know if it's been mentioned here before, but might be of interest to some of you. UK Tobacco Brand Index 1870-1980 (pdf). Two alphabetized sections: one for pipe tobacco and one for cigarettes. Looks pretty complete altho I can't find any listing for Sullivan's Flake 69 or State Express Navy Flake (the listings are supposed to be by distributor, not manufacturer), and in the cigarette section they show Sobranie's manufacture of Chaliapin cigarettes ending in 1970, altho I can clearly remember them being around into the 70's. I will return to the site and do some more searching...there's a lot here!

Just type in "UK TOBACCO BRAND INDEX 1870-1980" and it should come up on google...that's how I stumbled on to it while looking for books re: old tobacco tins. When I said "pretty complete" I probably should have said pretty extensive...The Dunhill listings, for instance, are far short of the list John Loring put together years ago, altho maybe the listings in the index are brands that were packaged for mass sales while Loring maybe included things available only in-store at Dunhill. I've only glanced at a few things in the index...not something anyone will consume in one bite.

Cheers for the heads up, mate. It makes interesting reading. Interesting and heartbreaking. To see all the amazing sounding pipe tobaccos that are long gone. That goes double for cigarettes! The selection of cigarettes in the UK is fucking tragic, these days.

They're long lists so i'll read them more thoroughly when i've got some spare time.

Makes one wonder. So many blends, if not blenders, ended during WWII - hard times, plainly.

F&T Haymarket Returns makes me chuckle - I can imagine wealthy customers trying to find a preference and returning failures, all to be lobbed into a big barrel and sold as a sort of pensioners mix.
