I had the same experience back in 1961, and a thorough – – very thorough – – cleaning, reaming, etc., coupled with a week's rest for the affected pipes resolved the issue. Buy a cob or two to use in the meantime.

This happens to me when I over-smoke... Especially with cigars. Everything I smoke tastes super salty. Take a few days, heal your mouth, and things will return to normal.

Thanks again, everyone. My tastebuds are returning to normal. I've also taken a pretty good break from the Latakia, although I miss it a lot. I'm convinced that it was a combination of three things:
1. Smoking too fast, too often, burning the shit outta' my tastebuds. (Cigarette mentality that I'm still trying to shake...)

2. Latakia overload. I was smoking Lane's "Crown Achievement" almost exclusively.

3. Inadequate cleaning. Although I'm conscientious about cleaning my pipes, with heavy use, I'm finding that the stems, in particular, require cleaning with alcohol.
Thank you very much.

Same thing happened to me a couple of months ago. Like you, I kinda freaked out for a couple of days. Read the internet and tried to self diagnose. All sorts of things can apparently cause that reaction. Bat after maybe 4-5 days I was back to normal completely. The issue hasn't recurred.

I had a sour pipe that tasted like I was smoking grass cuttings and twigs. I gave it a good clean with a pipe cleaner dipped in alcohol and also dipped some paper towel in alcohol and cleaned the bowl to extremes, when I was sure the pipe was cleaned beyond my standards I rested it for a day and a half then packed it with 4noggins "down by the river" and the result was superb. My favorite pipes that I smoke every day get an alcohol pipe cleaner ran though them quickly every night and rested over night but I just get some clean paper towel and clean out the bowl and use the alcohol in the bowl weekly.
But that works for me, I'm only a two month piper with much to learn.

Very nice. Thank you, Matt. Glad I'm not alone. Toby, I've been using alcohol only occasionally, but I'm thinking I'll make it a part of my regular regimen. Thank you.

If all your pipes taste bad it is more than likely your palate. Mine goes off with some regularity, sometimes more, sometimes less.

Thanks... I didn't really take much of a break, but my mouth has healed, anyway. I find that if I smoke too fast or too much, the roof of my mouth feels like I've been eating overly hot pizza. LOL At that point, I usually switch to something a little milder.

Tenderness to any part of the mouth or pain in the tongue can't be remedied by a different blend, though some blends do indeed bite. For instance Mac Baren, which is notorious, with the exception of Navy Flake; and there are probably others that smoke normally in their line. Everything else, without exception, that I've smoked of theirs has bitten me.
As an aside bite only refers to a chemical reaction in the mouth.
The roof of your mouth, however, clearly, is reacting to smoking too fast. For me smoking slowly has only come very slowly. The correct method is to sip, not draw, on the pipe. Smoke as slowly as you possibly can be spacing your sips, and truly sipping. This goes against our inborn wish to suck, and the flavorful smoke goes against taking the minimum. We think more but really, in pipe smoking, the ideal is less.

I have never experienced a salt taste while smoking a pipe. Sounds pretty awful though. Maybe take a rest, clean out your pipes pretty well and try again.

Thanks, Mike. I know I'm smoking too fast. I've been focusing on slowing it down. I think I'm still breaking the cigarette smoker's habit of, choke it down and get back to work mentality.
Thanks again.
