That was an interesting fight to read about. I do believe it was rigged in Ali's favor, but I don't believe Ali knew that or had anything to do with it.
But, there was so much Fine Art in that whole match, magic, love, trickery, "I'm going to float like a butter fly." Norman Mailer made that fight the American story.

The irony here is that Paul is attempting to hack the system using Ali's initial strategy. When Ali (then Cassius Clay) came into the game, he did so without a modicum of respect from other boxers, despite his Olympic showing. Archie Moore even jumped in the ring against him because he wanted to shut the kid up. Ali stirred up the community, but he also saved the sport by sensationalizing it and making people pay attention again. The same is essentially happening here. No matter who loses, boxing wins because they get new viewers.

I'd argue that George Foreman is the GOAT - just take a peep at both his record and his age, given the challengers he faced. My  favorite, however, is Sonny Liston [Or as Ali named him, the Big Ugly Bear], the gangster-turned-world champion who was shunned by the whole world despite his desire to participate legitimately in the boxing world. He lied about his age (nobody knows exactly when he was born, but he may have been in his 50's while facing a prime Muhammad Ali) and his comeback story was derailed by a last second health scare. There's a book entitled The Murder of Sonny Liston that I can't recommend highly enough.

Sonny Liston's accomplishments in professional fighting and the circumstances of his death are too readily romanticized, considering the type of person he truly was.
The man should have been executed before he ever stepped into a boxing ring. Being sentenced to hundreds of years imprisonment for the crimes that he had already committed would not have been appropriate, since he continued to violently prey upon and exploit others once he was finally incarcerated.

He may be your favorite but you would not want to have ever encountered the man.

Who's to say? Everybody has multiple faces. Maybe he'd have killed me or maybe we'd have been besties. He's my favorite because he's simply the most interesting from my perspective.

Nigel Benn? One of these things is not like the other. He was a good boxer, but doesn’t have the resume of the big four you mentioned. Also, Gerald Mclellan knocked him outta the ring in the first round and would’ve won that fight if not for the unfortunate blood clot in his brain. That guy threw the heaviest body shots I have ever seen, annihilated Julian Jackson, twice.
Gerald McClellan would have won that fight in the first round, were it not for the criminally biased actions of the referee saving Benn after that first knockdown.

Things would have turned out much different for the G-Man, had he not made the fateful decision to leave Emanuel Steward several months prior to the Nigel Benn fight.
He and Oliver McCall allowed Don King to convince them that they did not need the man who had made them; so on September 24, 1994 (hours after McCall's greatest triumph), they both officially severed ties with Emanuel Steward (via letter) and sealed their own fates.

I should have included:

Gerald McClellan was quite possibly the most vicious and/or dangerous fighter to ever lace up a pair of gloves.
His opponents had to fight for their lives because the G-Man was trying to take them away.

Haven't read this thread, so this has probably been posted but...

Tyson is one of the greatest heavyweights of all time, at 57 he's still a monster. If he actually fights, and doesn't just coast, he could easily kill Paul. Is this a legitimately sanctioned fight?!? Paul should seriously rethink his life choices.

Oh, and I'm not sure who my favorite is, too many to pick one. But I can easily say who my LEAST favorite is. Prince Naseem Hamed. GOD I hated that clown.

After watching reels of Tyson training compared to reels of Paul training, you can clearly see that Tyson still has it, and Paul is still learning. As someone that does not like the arrogance of either of the Paul kids; I'm rooting for Tyson, and I hope he knocks Paul out to where he wants to give up his short boxing career.

As an 80's kid my favorite boxers were: Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, and then later on it was Oscar De La Hoya. Since the early 2000's I haven't really paid much attention to the sport.

Yeah, as long as Tyson can put the scews to Paul early, he can win. If the match goes on, no amount of training is going to outlast the youth and energy that Paul has. But Tyson has pure quick knockout power, always has. I wouldn't want to get hit by him.

I'll watch it, if I remember to.

The fight I REALLY want to watch is Fury vs Usyk, but Fury is being both greedy and chickenish about it, in my eyes he's lost credibility.

As for favourite fighters, I'm going to say split between Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis, and Alexandar Usyk. Prime Tyson is just staggering to watch, and the person appears to be very interesting too. Messed up, sensitive, frightened, callous, all mixed together.

I firmly believe Benn was juiced up for that fight. He avoided providing samples at the end of the fight by being escorted out of the arena by high profile gangsters from the British underworld he was known to keep company with. How Benn wasn't sanctioned after failing to provide the samples has always baffled me. I honestly can't stand the man, a complete lowlife whose best mates were bully gangsters, and who got juiced up for a fight and basically took another man's life. It was no surprise to me when his son was caught using PEDs, and for me, that is clearly the reason Eubank feared for his own son's life in the fight they were meant to have before it got pulled.

Guys it is highly unlikely Tyson will win this fight. He is nearly 60. Not to have a pop at anyone that age, but it is just the truth. We see snap shots of Tyson hitting the bags and that looks good. But that is just a 20 second burst. He will do that against that little fuckdog Paul, and will then be knackered, and get picked off.

Not much interested in the Tyson/Paul fight, but have at it...

Tyson in his prime was amazing to watch, though. He may have annoyed some pay-per-view purchasers and bar owners with those early knockouts, but wow, what a show.

My favorite fighters were Bernard Hopkins, Marvin Hagler, Julio Cesar Chavez and, of course, Ali.

I don't follow boxing at all anymore. I've tried to watch some, but for whatever reason I can't get back into it.

Also, big muscles are always slower, especially the older they get. Tyson may have a lot of meat holding his head up, which might make him harder to knock out, but I don't expect him to be able to power punch his way through the match. I don't know this Paul guy very well, but I definitely do not think that the muscle bound Tyson is going to be anywhere near his peak.

That recent footage of Mike starting his camp, yeah, 57 and dude still looks scary af. He just needs to touch him once and its over.

Other then that the whole thing is a joke, or just the attention the younger Paul needs to get eyes back on him and people talking about him since the world was completely oblivious to his last fight.

People keep saying “oh its a pay day for Mike, pay day for Mike” lol dude doesnt need a payday hes all set.

Agreed. Even in an uneventful fight you can expect to swing hundreds of times and take dozens, if not hundreds, of hits. In that sense, Tyson is fighting two opponents: Paul, and Father Time.

Tyson is looking great in recent videos, but he was also seen with a cane in the not-so-distant past. For him, this fight is a blessing because it provides the motivation to get back in fighting shape and to feel young again. He gets that even if he doesn't win, but he can revel in it if he does.

For Paul, it's all plus too. If he wins, he'll always be able to say he beat Tyson, even if there is an asterisk following that statement. But if he loses, he'll be able to say, "Well of course I lost! It's Mike mutha fuggin Tyson!" His name still grows like a Chia Pet.

I just think of seeing Mike on all of those Comedy Channel roasts, all cranked up on some drug, looking fat and sad. He never stood up for long, and you hardly ever saw him walk. I am not sure how long ago those were. But, everyone was making references to Mike as being a coke fiend. Honestly, I have no experience with that, but it cannot be good for your heart.
That is what runs through my head when I hear Tyson now.
