Two questions

Great, informative thread. I had no idea that shellac was used in the finishing of pipes. I always assumed that it was just a stain and then wax.

I sanded down my first pipe, since the varnish was starting to come off, then I tried re-finishing it but unfortunately I had sanded it so much it was sort of weirdly shaped now. Turned out really ugly. :D

Sounds like a good candidate for a texture job...
