Chris, I have several Dunnies. I shrink at the thought of having "something" done to any of them. I admire your courage and appreciation of the pipe itself for going through with the repair. That takes guts, my friend.
I love saddle bits as well. And the Cumberland is a winner.
I have a Ashton (Bill Taylor era) EX panel that is awesome. I just can't smoke it. Bill must have been hitting the drams pretty hard at the time. The bit feels as if it is thicker than a phone book. I have put it up and never smoke it. But, since it is an Ashton made by Bill Taylor, I haven't had the heart to have it "fixed."
Your experience has given me the notion and gumption to get that stem whittled down to size.
Thanks and congrats. Beautiful Dunhill and I'm sure you will enjoy smoking your treasure.

It's too bad the original stem was crushed and melted in the conversion process. No, wait, you saved the original stem - so no harm, no foul!
+1! If you ever decide to part ways with that Dunhill, you can just stick the original stem back on it and Ta-Da! Back to original. Good for you for having the forethought to get an all new custom fit stem, rather than altering the original.
Enjoy!

I had a Charatan Canadian in 1959. The stem broke off several years later and left the tenon inside. I never sent it anywhere. Just smoked it with the briar in my mouth. Compared to that, your pipe looks good and feels great in the mouth. They did a very nice job.

Agreed. I know some diehard Dunhill fans are holding their head in shame for me.
Normally I would agree (blasphemy! It's blasphemy I tell you!) However, it is just a pipe. Even if a Dunhill, it's not the Holy Grail. And honestly, that cumberland looks so good, I am eyeing my pipes (even my Dunhill) with the idea of getting one too.
Just smoked it with the briar in my mouth.
Now that's a pipe smoker.

Guys, I am letting this one go. Barely broken in 2000 Dunhill Shell Briar. Box, leather sleeve, two stems, and an ounce of Stonehaven or two if you purchase from me. If no takers, this one will go off to Briar Blues in a few days. Sorry no pics of the sleeve or box as I am currently travelling. I plan on sending this one to Mike on Friday if no takers. Asking $345.
