Starting to Get Obsessed

I can relate... Been 40 myself I find that I don't care anymore for what other people have to say. I know who I am, where i want to be and how to get there. The million $ question is....with whom do I want to be with in this journey and been 40 means that we have a very small window of opportunity to go after out dreams.

How wonderful for you, Anthony. My wife got me a W. O. Larsen when I turned 40. Now, more than thirty years later, it still remains one of my favorites. Treasure life-- it's wonderful, and each new year brings wonders to behold.

Some of you have made some great posts in reply to this thread. Thank you. And Chris... great video. Who doesn't love a little Bob Seger from time to time. Acutabove... that reminds me. I have a book I need to finish writing.

Happy Birthday! Up until age 40, I made it through all of my hell raising without a broken bone or an operation of any kind. Got inducted into both of those clubs several times in my 40th year.
On the bright side, I got it all out of the way that one year...and since my wife is an E.R. nurse, I got to have some unexpected extra time with her during the day on several occasions.
Now at 56, I don't remember things, I am rounder than I've ever been, and if I bend over, the glare that shoots between the few hairs on the top of my head is blinding to those around me.
I have found that with age, I don't take much crap off of people anymore, and I feel like I have earned my few vices: good whiskey, good wine, and my pipes.
Looks like you've got the years by the horns. Dig those spurs in, and keep riding! Again, blessings on this day for you.

I thought 30 was important, 40 wasn't so much. Fifty seemed to be important but did not feel that way. 60 was the big deal for me personally since it was going to be the beginning of what would end up as retirement in the next decade. I'm guessing that the next decades: 70, 80 and 90 will have their own significance but it is, thankfully, early yet...

For you, this will be a big deal and congratulations on that. You might have to change your Avitar to more closely reflect you new persona :D

Although I have lived in Gasgow, Scotland for almost all of my life I had never got into a real fight until the morning after my 40th birthday. It left me shaken and feeling physically sick. I was absolutely justified- dealing with an intruder in my house, but what a way to be inducted into middle age! Thankfully, nothing was damaged except my self-confidence. I didn't expect to lose about 50s of my memory and wake up in another room on the floor with my assailant seeking an end to the hostilities.

I am now 45, will be 46 at the end of March and I have decided that it means little to me...now. I had my midlife crisis on my 42nd birthday and for a few months after that. Since coming to China I have lost weight and have a tan for much of the year. My friends say I've never looked better. I can cycle for hours in high Asian heat and feel good about it. But I am totally ashamed at how pathetic I look when I try to run!

However, with my new goatee and tartan shirt I look like a dyed-in-the-wool pipesmoker! Young people's reactions when I point my pipe at them for emphasis are priceless! :)

Thanks everyone. I'm thinking this is going to be a good year. I'm off to a good start already. I ordered a new pipe and tobacco yesterday as a birthday gift to myself. And my 2014 st. Patty's Day Pete came in the mail the day before. I can say one thing for sure about 40. It's going to involve a lot of smoke. :)

Belated Happy Birthday Anthony! I always enjoy your posts. I remember when I turned 40. My wife had a big party for me with lots of friends, and the usual gag gifts; old folks' diapers, fake prescription for Viagris, stool softners, etc. It was fun. At 50 no party. Like Bradley said, no one was thinking about it at all, only at 50 instead of 60. It's amazing how much more contemplative you get as you get older. Your kids start hitting 30 and you think, whaaaaaa? I agree with whoever said above to take each day as it comes and try to enjoy it for what it brings. I think pipe smoking can be a BIG part of that enjoyment. God bless and may there be many more to come!
Teddy, I thought 50 was the ultimate F word. Maybe it's a little f, big F thing, suppose?

Happy belated birthday! For me, 40 was mostly just a big, round number - but I did wind up getting my first set of bifocals... :D

Happy 40th; it's a great age. The Old Cajun nailed it and since I'll turn 62 next month I take his wisdom to heart.

I spent my 40th on a cruise with my wife and our best friends. I awoke at dawn, went to the top deck, lit a cigar and stood on the rail and peed toward Cuba. I'll say that it was the best piss I've had. I won't get into how I celebrated 50 & 60.

Enjoy your year and have lots of fun and never forget to laugh as often as possible.

Lol thanks everyone! Papipeguy... is that a true story? Lol I love it!
Well my birthday continued today. My brother in law showed up at my job with a pound of tobacco for me. I got a small amount of an aro called Mist from a B&M in Arlington Texas for christmas, that I fell in love with. I told him I was going to have to get more. So today was a nice surprise, when he showed up with a pound of it. He also said he wants to take up pipe smoking himself. I told him I'd give him one of mine. We just have to hope my little sister will let him lol.

The take home message, whether 40 or 41, is to enjoy the day and celebrate with those we feel most close. Keeps you young!

Young whippersnapper, I have pipes older than you. Someone once said "It's straight downhill from 40."Physically, I agree, but mentally you continue to grow (I hope).
