I made my monthly visit to the local antique store this afternoon. While not experiencing any eureka moments, I did find a couple of pipes of interest.
The first one caught my attention because it was in an immaculate looking Charatan box with the label "Shape No. 47" on it. I quickly looked that up on my phone and saw that was not what was in the box. This was:
So that's a brand new P.Viou, shape L130 P. It's got a bit of age patina on it, but I don't think it's very old. It is a St Claude pipe, so I read. Once buffed, the grain should look nice. It appears to be of good craftsmanship. For ten bucks it was a bargain. I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
The other pipe is more of a mystery.
This one is really worn and will take some work to get in to smoking condition, but the faint stamps read, "Specially Made for Peterson's -LTD". the other side says, "Straight Grain" and "Made in England".
Why would Peterson's need to have another company make pipes for them?
It's a fair pipe, not spectacular, but should be a good smoker. That one was six dollars.
There are a lot more pipes there that I'll have to go back with my loupe and analyze. One is a churchwarden with a crazy looping stem.
