Limited experience tells me a tub of Carter Hall just might stay fresh for months & months & months... years?

Surprised no one mentioned the propylene glycol issues.

Isn't that loaded on "codger blends" and keeps them "moist" forever?
Amen. I find PG irritating so I smoke the "matches" only; not the original codger blends.

For me, I find that I like tubs most for the following reasons:

1. Tubs seem to offer the pipe tobacco in a much more reliably consistent fashion. I have had pouches that were quite atypical (extremely dry, excessively moist).

2. To me, tubs REMAIN consistent through the whole tub. I attribute this to the lid fitting well. Now, that said, I can consume a tub relatively quickly (perhaps 6 weeks, so your mileage may vary).

3. Pouches “feel” wasteful to me…. I just toss them when empty…. I have always saved and found many, many uses for empty tubs.

4. Tubs have a lower cost per ounce of pipe tobacco and I like being more “frugal”.

So, for me, I always PREFER to buy OTCs by the tub.

Ok, I know this is really old but I had to throw my experience out there. I’ve got a tub of Prince Albert that sat out on my patio, in the sun and snow, for at least a year. Before that it was in my unheated garage for at least another year. The stupid tobacco is fine. I can’t believe I spend all this money on mason jars. I should just find PA tubs and throw it all in there.

I buy Prince Albert by the tub. The seal is decent, but even the pouch version will remain smokable almost indefinitely lol. Love that stuff.

I’m going to say it. For the codger brands, a tub is the way to go unless the pouch is fresh. So many gas station pouches under a glass counter have dried beyond repair.

I might be inclined to think it's more a result of the propylene glycol bath it's given, although I appreciate how well the tub lid fits...
