I’ve only ever bought pouches of OTC blends. What about the larger tub size of say SWR? How long once opened will they remain fresh when cellared. Is it better to jar an opened tub to help it age without drying out?

Although I don't have a lot of long term experience to speak of, I recently opened both a pouch and a 7 oz tub of SWR and both seemed exactly the same. Because it would take me more than a week to even go through a pouch, I always transfer to a mason jar. Honestly, the seal on the tub was a little sketchy so I'm glad I didn't cellar it in the tub :). Once jarred it should remain as fresh as the tub for years to come.

I find that the tub tastes better then the pouch and a tub will keep fresh for years after opening. I have tubs of SWR, Prince Albert, Carter Hall and many more that are still fresh after 3 years. A many years ago I found an opened tub of Carter Hall that had been in a closet for 8 yrs and I had some of the best smoking in my 55 yrs of smoking a pipe.

The large SWR is 30% off at P&C, making it slightly more than the middle sized tub.

I have the coffee can style tub of Half and Half, which is my reliable, go to blend. I also use it for kindling to keep stubborn flakes lit.

The can has the same moisture now as 3 months ago when I popped the top.

I smoke about one pipeful, maybe two, from a tub of whatever each day. It gets slightly drier at the end months later, but this is of no significance to me. I just make sure the lid is on all the way when closing. (Those tubs, by the way, make filling a pipe easier than with any other storage accommodation.)

On a side note: my five-months-out Covid-addled palate still can't taste tobacco very well. I'm smoking Ennerdale right now, and it's just another tobacco to me at the moment. Not anything outlandish at all. For some silly reason, it's only OTCs that seem tasty to me. And thank God for nicotine, or I probably wouldn't be smoking at all now.)

I smoke the 7 oz tubs of SWR pretty regularly. They have the plastic coffee can style lids, and one tub usually lasts me about one month and never dries out to an unsmokable level. Those rare occasions where a tub lasts 3 months or so the tobacco is still perfectly fine. The pouches can be hit or miss because if they’re from a grocery store or something like that they might have been sitting there for years and they aren’t exactly hermetically sealed. The tubs on the other hand are sealed until opened and can be stored for long periods of time unopened.

Limited experience tells me a tub of Carter Hall just might stay fresh for months & months & months... years?

Surprised no one mentioned the propylene glycol issues.

Isn't that loaded on "codger blends" and keeps them "moist" forever?

I posted this on the WAYS thread, but I'm smoking some Granger from the tub this morning and it is still as moist as the day I opened it, over a year ago. Results may vary depending on humidity, though, it survived a cold dry winter where I'm at.
It's almost annoyingly true. I hate that the tubs don't ever dry out! Takes forever for my liking.
