I have this estate pipe with an identical cumberland stem to a dunhill made in 1938 that Jiminks posted. The marque says “COLUMBIA/Made in France” and has some really fine crosshatching surrounding “Columbia” in an oval. I haven’t seen another stamp even remotely like it. Anyone know anything about it?image 2.jpegimage 4.jpegimage 5.jpegimage 3.jpeg

It is a different stem than Jims pipe but similiar design. There were once so many makers and brands in St Claude that is difficult to trace them all. Its got some fills but that wasnt a deal breaker at all with older French pipe. A lot of these makers also made and stamped pipes for various tobacco companies, tobac shops and the like. If you could order enough pipes and pay for your own stamp you could have your own pipe brand. Pipe making in St Claude was so prolific people who didnt smoke pipes bought pipes as souvenirs. Many to this day are unsomked.

I didn’t mean to imply they were the same shape, but rather the same finish. I haven’t seen a Cumberland stem like before that so it stuck out

Wow! A LOT of work went into that stamp! Took a look in Who Made That Pipe, but no joy. The only entry for Columbia gave Alpha as either the make or distributor and the country of manufacture as USA.

The pipe was clearly made for the US market, but no other info.

Have you checked:

Right?! The really fine detail in the crosshatching? That blew my mind. I checked pipedia but not the other link, but I’m going to now.
