I kind of hate the idea of graduating to a blend style. They're all a matter of taste. And yeah taste evolves and changes but it's not a linear thing. I kind of go back and fourth in what I smoke more accurate way to put it is that now I have a better idea of what I am in the mood for at what times.
Well said! I think far too often we get the wrong idea that we have to like a blend just because it gets high marks on review sites or we hear others ranting and raving how "this" is the greatest tobacco ever and everything else is crap compared to it. Smoking a pipe is about what the individual likes and that's it. No need to over complicate things by trying to pound square pegs in round holes while smoking tobacco you hate because everyone says you should love it.

I haven't acquired the ability to taste all the tobacco flavors I read about. But, I do enjoy simple blends like Duke Albert. Maybe it's not worth the effort and expense for me to try to find my perfect tobacco. Maybe I'm a codger. I can live with that.

Lat blend is typically suggested to the new smoker because Lat is really easy to identify and enjoy. Where as aromatics are tend to be on the wet side, and cause tongue bite with new smokers. VA burns hot, so that's rather set aside too.

Codger blends and Lat blends usually burns cool and smoke easy with minimum effort.

English blends are typically made with VA base with Latakia, Oriental, and some other components. However Lat burns cooler.

Nothing wrong with that, smoke what you enjoy. I have blends that I smoked for months not knowing what I was tasting but just knew I liked them and that was good enough for me. Some blends took months before I had a feel for what I was tasting. If aromatics are your thing, there's no shortage of blends to explore in that one category alone.

heck yeah. It's funny when I smoke those star blends that are raved about often I find them meh and every once in a while totally agree. Honestly at the end of the day we're weirdos that burn leafs in a fancy tube for pleasure. And man there are a lot of gems that just don't get attention.

I agree totally. Never got a bite out of an English blend.

it's all tobacco. I tend to pick up more flavors and nuances if I don't go looking for them. If I just enjoy the pipe. It's boardline zen how it works for me at least. Also focusing more on the ember instead of the flavor helps get more flavors. Kind of think of it like you're trying to tend the ember so it's doing a low steady burn and nope don't have to get it perfect either.

This is the way I look at it. Unfortunately these days, so many want everything to follow rules and paths or methods or plans or some "right way" or something. Like "but this is the path...", similar to people working in any field that requires an advanced diploma, where the new guy comes in and "but the book says" or "but that's not in the book..." and then they can't deal with reality that nothing is "by the book" and sometimes you just have to wing it, or use some judgement calls.

But yeah, I know some days I think "you know, I just want a salad" and other days it's like "give me steak and potatoes" while other people are like "no, you can't have a salad today, you had pizza yesterday, salad doesn't follow pizza, if you had tacos last night, then you could have progressed to salad today". Like, wut?

Yes and a lot of people seem to be afraid they're doing it wrong. Like the person that apologizes for still enjoying the wines from my local region which are simply just not complex compared to other varietals. Like hey they're simple but good nothing wrong with that. And all these learning things aren't about being correct they're about finding what you like.

When I was in school we actually had a class about that. And how if you ever get into management your first months shouldn't be about fixing everything but seeing how they actually work there and then you can start to tinker with it.
and then they can't deal with reality that nothing is "by the book" and sometimes you just have to wing it, or use some judgement calls.
I always say to people the same thing a degree doesn't teach you how to do the thing. It teaches you enough for you to get started on learning it.
Yeah that whole pairing thing. Some people act like it's a hard fast rule. And it's really as simple as in general these things are more likely to be appreciated together. I often end my day with lighter smokes and start with the more heavy in your face flavors. For my palate it's more about contrast then strength. But not how it works for everyone.
Bottom line it's your pipe and your tobacco and all of us here can help you learn tricks and techniques that may help you enjoy the pipe with more ease and less problems.... But you like what you like.
I started with aromatics. Mainly under the impression that I already had other ways to enjoy straight tobacco flavor. Then found a few blends I really liked and now I mostly smoke tobacco forward blends but really enjoy aromatics when the mood hits. And the thing is the most important thing I learned is when I will enjoy certain things the most. What mood I am in and what else I am doing while smoking.

If you want latakia I will add another vote for GLP Quiet Nights. Ive tried a lot of lat blends. A lot are good but QN is stellar. Its dark, smooth a nice hint of sweetness and not overwhelming. For me its the perfect lat to sit back and contemplate.

Agreed! Try a tin of GLP Meridian if you feel like exploring. If you love QN, Meridian is a winner too.
