I recently tried Cornell & Diehl's Pirate Kake for the first time. It's classified as an English blend, containing a robust 75% Latakia. Rounding out the blend is burley and Turkish tobaccos. It comes in cake form and rubs out easily. The moisture level was just about right.

I’d shied away from this blend because of it’s 75% Latakia. I like other blends with Latakia so I decided to give it a try. It’s pretty good and not as strong as I expected. Some blends from Seattle Pipe Club, such as Plum Pudding and Potlatch, are stronger tasting to me (and among my favorites). Pirate Kake has the smoky flavor I expected but I still taste some of the Orientals too. Not a complex blend, but neither is it one-dimensional. Three stars out of four.

Good stuff. Decadent brownies of tobacco-y delight.

Somehow the high percentage of Latakia crosses the line from sharply smoky to creamy. I think the Turkish leaf in the blend helps to do that but it’s just a theory.
