Troubles With Virginias

I think all of the above advice about virginias is spot-on, BUT ---
It doesn't sound like you're smoking a virginia blend at all. It sounds more like you're smoking some kind of shop aromatic with a little VA tossed in. No wonder it smokes hot!!! The cavendish component, if it's anything like 90 percent of the bulk blends I've tried, will smoke hotter than Hades no matter what you do.
My advice is to find a better tobacco, preferably not a shop blend with cavendish in it.

That is what I was thinking! I bought a shop blend only because every tin in the shop was twice as expensive as they are on P&C. I'll be sure to pick up a good baccy on my next trip.

Have you tried shopping online? Most stores sell Lane products under their house names, but there are still a handful of really, really good shops that make their own blends that are as good as any tinned product but a lot cheaper.

Also, have you tried some of the classic "drugstore blends" like Carter Hall or Prince Albert? They're really inexpensive but many of us believe they're as good as any of the high-end tin smokes.

You could also call Cornell and Diehl and ask for a sampler pack. They manufacture many if not most of the really classic blends out there right now, and this way you can try a whole buffet of tobacco types for about what a carton of cigarettes costs!

I am new here and new to pipe smoking.... but 45 minutes?
I smoke pretty slow and have learned to 'sip' but mine usually last 30 minutes or so...
I have no idea what an average bowl size is though. I also just use gravity to pack and tamp as little as possible. My pipe smoking excperince has increased drastically since I started.
I have been smoking all sorts of different types.

My 'local' smoke shop has a ton of different types of tobaaccos in jars, a lot of times I have no clue what I am smoking, but will try to get some stuff posted in the tobacco review section so I can get some feedback on what I like, dont like etc. Cause I really have no idea!
