Give it about 50 years or so, and you'll start to get the hang of it.

I personally don't use methods, but if others find them helpful, that's a good thing.

At its essence, smoking a pipe is really simple, and for me, one of the signs that I'm dealing with a newbie is the added complexities, theories, and "discoveries" that they bang on about. With time, they get over that.

You practice, you experiment, you make some connections, and you get better at it.

The Frank Method is almost bulletproof if not bulletproof. breathing rate is right behind it. After that would be how the initial light is started. Drying can be included in packing.

A very hearty agreement with the Frank Method! I have been using that method a lot for a very long time and it just works. Depending on the blend, I will sometimes just jam stuff in there and light 'er up, but any blend with a consistent and uniform cut will benefit from the Frank Method. I think the most important part of it, and the part I tend to overlook, is the lighting method. Franks says only one second at a time, and it will take up to five times. This seals the top surface and does not cause nearly so much swelling and overflow if your pipe is filled flush. Very nice. Also extends the time until the first tamp is necessary.

Judge: why did you rob 10 stores timmy?

timmy: I needed the practice and wanted to get my method down pat.

Judge: ok you can go.

I wonder how many people just taking up the pipe, just take up the pipe, never appearing here or on other sites? Just stuffing, lighting and enjoying a good smoke. Gotta be a few who can figure it out, it's not rocket science. Then, quite possibly, they start to explore blends, pipes, and such, turning to sites such as this to expand their interest.

I'd say it's a greater number than most of us would estimate.
The social interaction of a forum is not everyone's "cup of tea."

Millions of people for many decades learned by trial and error, or from watching their dad .
The only piper I knew when I started piping in 1987 took an amount of Captain Black in his hand, rolled it into a loose ball in his palm, then either added to it, or subtracted from it, then loaded it in his pipe. His left palm was always grungy, so I found my own way.
Within 3 days I was having great Captain Black smokes from the filthy pipe he have me. :)
When I really got into piping full time in the mid 2000s, I read a bunch on forums......but nothing changed, my techniques from 1987 were spot on so I ignored 99% of the advice given.
Load it, light it, smoke it.

Years ago when I was doing bronze work at the foundry one of the finishers was having a problem welding a small ornament to a maquette statue. He called to the shop foreman for help with it. The foreman sat down and in 30 seconds did what the finisher had been trying to do for an hour. Then he said the words that changed my life "It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to work." Words to live by.
