The Orval is great but the St. Bernardus is noticeably better. The Tre Fontane is on another level.
St Bernadus 12 (the blue label) is very good, and is made to the same recipe and with the same water as Westvleteren 10
Having just googled to check I wasn't talking bollocks, it seems to be called Westvleteren 12 (I could have sworn it used to be called '10', no idea where I got that from!), and lots of people think they are actually quite different.Lovely. I prefer quads, but tripels hit the spot sometimes. Orval and St. B are good. Tre Fontane I've never had the opportunity to try.
What! Here all these years I've wondered whether I'll ever get my hands on Westy 10, and the whole time it was the same beer as St. B 12!? I had no idea. I do like St. B 12 very much.
I got my hands on Rochefort 10, once, and at the time it wasn't obvious to me that it was lightyears better than St. B 12 or Chimay Bleu.
I don’t think of Orval as a triple either. If anything it is more of a farmhouse ale but really it is its own thing and I find it to be delicious.I've never thought of Orval as a triple - it's one of my favourite beers, it's so distinctive. If you can get it, St Bernadus 12 (the blue label) is very good, and is made to the same recipe and with the same water as Westvleteren 10, which regularly gets voted 'best beer in the world'.
