Next October I've got a trip to punta Cana (honeymoon) . I haven't been smoking a pipe and in the winter I practically don't touch my pipe. So obviously traveling is something I've never done with my pipe. I am going on about three trips in between now and then but all of them are road trips. This will be the first flight I get to go on with my pipe. Or will it? Does the airport take kindly to carrying your pipe and tobacco? Should I pack it in my luggage? Should I just say forget it and go without? Also I bought a small butane lighter for the pipe and it kind sucks.... I've gone back to matches. Anything worth using that isn't as costly as a pipe?

I recommend you carry on your pipes and tobaccos. As for a source of ignition butane lighters can be carried on (soft flame only but that shouldn't be an issue unless you smoke cigars too). I usually just avoid the hassle and buy a cheap lighter or matches when I arrive. Duty free stores have them because they usually sell cigarettes and cigars (some carry pipe tobacco so make sure you ask, it's not always in plain sight).
Yeah, it's no issue, but put it in your carry-on. I know for sure that BIC lighter is fine to pass through security now. The TSA website has up-to-date info on their fly/no fly list for carry on.
Recently travelled via air for the first time with my pipe. I took a couple of cheap bics along. I had a pouch with my Peterson, two metal pipe nails and baggies of baccy. No issues for me, but this was just in the states.
Take a road worthy pipe along, not one of your prize possesions. Something sturdy would be good, like a half bent bulldog, or something rather inexpensive and replaceable!
Good question. I'm flying to Vegas tomorrow and I've been scouring the boards for advice. I'm definitely leaving my nice lighters at home and bringing a cheap Bic. Carry on for sure because TSA says no fuel lighters in checked baggage. And a sturdy pipe.

Not a problem. Carry your pipes with you - I use an inexpensive 2 pipe bag I found on Amazon. I used to travel with Falcon pipes, now it travel with Bulldog shaped pipes because they are compact but sturdy. Tobacco in a baggie, pipe nail, and a bic lighter or a Zippo, and pipe cleaners. Don't travel with a sealed tin unless you are planning on opening it or are ok with opening it as security, or the pressure differential, may pop it open.
You can pretty much count on having to open it for security ... but, based on my experience traveling with my cigar tote, I doubt it will pop open due to the pressure differential ... more likely, it will re-seal itself.
I've had no problem carrying a Zippo with me - and I've even seen displays of Zippo lighters in airports with current regs posted (a single filled Zippo is perfectly acceptable in carry-on luggage, if I'm remembering the phrasing correctly). Carrying a can of spare fuel might raise a few eyebrows, though... so I make sure to have a small box of safety matches as a backup. Again, no problems in carryon so far.
I'm flying from New Orleans to San Francisco on Saturday with an instrument, a pipe, and (hopefully) a few tins of tobacco to last me the summer. It looks like I'll have a splendid time at the airport... :|

I have a neat little 4 pipe zipper tote that allows me to pack a mess of pipe cleaners, a Czech tool and a small tobacco pouch. I've flown with it state to state and packed it in with my overhead bag and just bought a Bic lighter once in my new destination. Just watch for those people who always try to cram their bag into an already too full compartment. The things people do on airplanes boggles the mind sometimes.

I'd just like to say that I'm really proud of this group for how long we've been able to refrain from the typical honeymoon/smoking pipe jokes. I thought we'd only get a few posts in before they started rolling, but you guys have impressed me. Now, on the cigar forums I frequent, that would be a different story...

Lifting the lighter ban is consistent with TSA's risk-based approach to aviation security. First and foremost, lighters no longer pose a significant threat. Freeing security officers up from fishing for 22,000 lighters every day (the current number surrendered daily across the country) enables them to focus more on finding explosives, using behavior recognition, conducting random screening procedures and other measures that increase complexity in the system, deterring terrorists. The U.S. is the only country in the world to ban lighters – all other nations, including Israel and the U.K., do not.

In other words, soft flame or Zippo lighters are okay. That being said, if you put a lighter in your luggage, expect them to want to pull it out to verify it is NOT a torch lighter. I travel a lot and I'm usually speedy through the whole process. I get annoyed when I get slowed down (or when someone else slows me down) and this is the reason I choose not to take a lighter with me. I'd rather buy one at a gift shop as a "souvenir" than be delayed in the security line.
