This is a companion post to my post about travel pipes. What tobacco do you take along on

trips and vacation? The first tobacco I grab is something relative mild but tasty, like Q-1 or

a Black Cavendish, not too challenging but enough to tide me over. Next, I'll take something

with a little more horsepower, in case I can really sit down and take my time -- maybe

Dunhill Mixture 965. If I have room for a couple of others, I might throw in an OTC. And

after that I might take one or two that need smoking up, just to clear the decks. I often

end up having fewer smoking sessions than expected. Travel is like that. What would your

top three (or so) be? Do you repackage them in ziplocks or just take along the tins?

Another good question! My preference is to re-package in ziplock bags. I usually take something that I think will leave a pleasant room note or at least not be inoffensive to others. My go-tos are Captain Black Cherry and Royal, and a little Prince Albert Soft Vanilla. Q-1 is nice to take along, as well, but I like to save that for when I'm home and have the proper time to smoke it.

I never put tobacco in baggies. I always use jars. Here is a pic of my travel case for weekend vacations...

I take them in tins if possibe. Previously opened in case TSA wants to view them. I don't ever put an unopened tin in checked baggage as it may "pop" open due to the pressure changes. My blends change from month to month when flying. I usually take a few straight VA's, a Vaper, and sometimes an English. Two must haves for me on a holiday are Wessex BCDF and Peterson's University Flake. I usually take along some SG St. James Flake but now I am gravitating to Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls and Escudo. If I take an English it is usually GL Please Quiet Nights or possibly Penzance in a baggy. I keep 20 or so tins open at one time in a Rubbermaid container for freshness so It depends a lot on what I am in the mood for at the time.

Since it is not practicable these days to travel with a bevvy of glass ball jars, if traveling I'll usually carry my leaf in doubled thick-walled large Ziploc bags. I travel with no less than several pounds, in a sturdy day pack on my back. Blends usually are English and Balkan bulks.

Since I only fly in an emergency (TSA crap) it's easier for me to travel with my tobacco. I always take 1Q and one that I am currently smoking, so it varies. I have started taking a MM cob with me along with another pipe, which gives me a variety.

I always have a bit of 7 Seas Regular with me. It's a great anytime tobacco.

The OTC blends like captain black come in convenient punches and there so goopy they won't dry out in a dessert do there a good choice. I personally love du Gil flake and it comes in a tin that fits in my pocket so that's the go-to for me. Of course one tin or one pouch will last me a week but that depends in how much you smoke.

I'm with Jud. I might not take any of my occasional smokes, but my standard rotation of GLP Cairo, CH, and McClelland's No.5100 Red Cake is going to come with me. I generally don't go away for long trips, so I can take a single tin / pouch or a small mason jar of each and have enough. I generally don't like to repackage, but since the Red Cake only comes in bulk I package it into the small mason jars when it arrives.

Well, I should clarify that I am a pilot and fly on my vacations as "Pilot-In-Command". Therefore, there is no TSA "Pat-Down". The exception is when I have beautiful ladies on board and then I elect to conduct the "Pat-Down-Procedure", personally (so far, I have gotten away with it)! I absolutely never fly the airlines. If I cannot fly myself where I want to go, then I drive. Thus, the briefcase of pipes and tobacco that I pictured in my earlier post, is always the same. My advice to all of you is to get a pilot licesnce, access to a plane, and to hell with the airlines!

I will add that to my "Need to do" list, post haste! I love the briefcase idea and I will have to put this into action. I'm a little tired of lugging around a cardboard box with jars and accessories stuffed inside. It just lacks class. I don't fly anywhere for vacation. I spend every weekend from May until October in either the 1000 Islands area or a friends cottage on a lake in the Adirondacks. Those places are paradise for me and only 1-2 hours drive.
