Prior to retiring I lived and worked in the DC Metro area. Traffic there was bad consistently ranked in the top 5 worst areas in the nation. For many years I used AWS (arrive early, depart early) to partially mitigate the amount of time sitting in traffic. Besides being bad it was unpredictable, not unusual for a one-hour trip it extend to three hours; any little hiccup (like a light rain), and traffic would be back up for multi-hour delays. I remember once in a "snowstorm" it took me 5 hours to go 9 miles. I think the most dangerous situations usually involved someone driving 35 on the beltway when everyone else was doing 70.

I don't smoke in the car as I'm afraid of being distracted by monkeying around with my pipe, besides I don't care to have my car interior smelling like the shed does. puffy
