Interesting the tug close by did basically nothing to assist, legal reasons?
There’s video out there showing that the tug was frantically trying to assist. There just wasn’t enough time for them to move back astern from their position near the bow. The sailing ship had sped up from 3 kts to about 6 kts after the tug brought their bow around.

I’m glad to hear although I grew up watching tugs bring in large ships on shelter island and now on the Columbia river in Oregon. Must be less powerful tugs in NY. Such a bummer, not just the beautiful ship but lots of careers and a couple lives lost.

Let me get this straight. The captain of the ship, before making the expedition, does not make a study of the route? If this happens to the Spanish school ship, I swear I will set fire to my flag.

No. Not a route error. They had a local pilot on board. Something happened - power failure has been suggested - that caused them to keep going in reverse as they maneuvered away from the dock.

I mean that in the study of the route, they do not inform about the infrastructure through which the vessel has to pass. In this case, the height of bridges, with respect to the height of the masts.

Crossing the Columbia River Bar can be hazardous to a ships health.

The ship wasn't supposed to go under the bridge. It was supposed to back out of its berthing pier, straighten out and move into New York Harbor. At no time was it supposed to try sailing under the bridge.

Eventually there is going to have to be a new rule that a single engine ship must be towed past the bar.

It didn’t knock down the Brooklyn Bridge, but it didn’t hit any critical supports like the vessel that hit the Francis Scott Key bridge either.
