If you all remember this
Was wondering if anyone else has had or currently has gotten a bit out of hand with drinking?

Lately with this pademonium on I find myself hitting the bottle regularly and topping it off with either a beer or wine - I was considering taking an break/ or possibly completely and sticking to the brown weed as my release
It is definitely taking a toll on my body - you can feel it in your head and physical aches and
Plus it's so expensive... feel free to chime in on this one

I may have an occasional drink, but I know I’m not as young as I used to be, so I don’t overdo it. I could drink like a fish when I was young and not even get a hangover. If I do that now, I will feel like death warmed over the next day. I lessened my drinks through the week not too long ago. I might have about three bourbons a week now. I used to easily do that each night. It’s become less of a daily habit and more of an occasional treat now, which is probably better health-wise, anyway.

My father died of alcoholism, and it wasn’t until then that we learned that alcohol withdrawal can kill you. I never learned that in school, so I always make it a point to say it, in case there are others like me who didn’t know. I enjoy a drink every now and then, but drinking is a rare thing for me. I agree that the frequency of drinking has certainly increased this year. Hasn’t been an easy one!

wintergarden, you are fortunate in being aware of the uptick in your drinking. Many who have susceptibility have to dismantle their lives -- jobs, relationships, friendships -- to put on the brakes. Everyone has their vulnerabilities, even if substance abuse isn't one of them. Knowing these and working on them makes life a lot better.

Withdrawal meaning within a few days or can it be prolonged? do you mean physical or mental or both? I too come from a long line of heavy drinkers

Withdrawal can be fatal, but I’m not sure of the time thresholds. It’s worth reading up on it.

I heard about people who didn’t consider themselves alcoholics, but had a few every day for enough years that just trying to give it up for lent sent them to the hospital. Had to be weaned. When I heard that I realized it was more serious than I thought. Didn’t touch a drink for a month to see how I’d fare, and luckily no effect. Except more money for pipes.

The big problem is the physical withdrawal - it’s called delirium tremens. Some have to be medicated using benzos to keep their heart rate down because coming off alcohol messes up your system real badly if you drink all the time. The mental side is tough and takes longer, but when an alcoholic stops cold turkey the immediate danger is keeping the DTs in check so the body doesn’t get overloaded.

This is a layman’s explanation, but for what it’s worth I’ve been clean and sober since February 21, 2019.

congrats on your sobreity - I've gone two month with no problems - Now Benzo's those are dangerous - those killed one of my family members and Jordan Peterson(internet philosophy figure) is basically rendered completely disabled due to doctors putting him on them. They really need to be banned completely and replaced with something less dangerous.

I quit for 9 months as a bet and won. I had no problems. I have heard of people having trouble with it so I am not saying it cant happen

Benzos are actually very important medicine, for example in treating DTs, the problem is using them as anxiety medicine and doctors handing them out as Candy.
