Could you explain to me too please Markw4mms? The topic I was interested is of great importance and was closed without any post explaining why.

It doesn't happen often, but if we feel a topic goes off track, for whatever reason, and is no longer a useful discussion, or has evolved into the type we do not care for in this environment, then it gets closed.
A few may even be deleted, but again, it doesn't happen often.
We don't want to be heavily moderated like some other forums, but we have to balance that and not let things go the other way too.

That's real shame to hear :( for us UK smokers who may be affected by the issue. I hope it can be reopened with any off topics removed?

That's what I intend to do once I have had a word about the reasons for the closure with Admin. I don't want to upset anyone, but this is the thin end of a wedge that could affect us all in the future. Hearing the news of the proposed smoking ban made me feel physically sick :crying:

I tend to agree with you Withnail. I love this site and understand the need for mods, but when a thread is closed please provide at least a basic reason so we can all know where it went wrong. Otherwise it WILL feel very heavy handed.
Just my .02!!!

Any objections to a new (ON TOPIC) version of the thread for UK forum members? Sorry for the number of posts, but I do feel strongly about the subject matter but don't want to break any forum rules. Being confined to the house by disability makes forums such as this a very important part of my day and therefore I have no wish to be band or to annoy Mods / Admin

I'm with Withnail. I thought the subject was important but of course its one where tempers flare.

I didnt see why it would be closed, but thats why I'm not a Mod.

There is another way to close a Topic with out completely closing it first.

just ask me to respond to it.

Well - there hasn't been any objections to my opening another thread on the subject so I guess it is ok?
I understand that it must be a hard judgement call for the Admin and Mods to close a thread, but there does seem to be exceptions like those mentioned above. There is even one thread that could invite a claim for liable. although I understand why the original poster was so annoyed.
But when a thread is shut down without a final post giving a reason, it is easy to wonder about it and come up with all sorts of possible explanations. I even thought there might be an anti-British sentiment, but I am sure that was just my paranoia at seeing the one topic I felt most passionately about being closed. I have had a response from my Member of Parliament and will post details later

Being confined to the house by disability makes forums such as this a very important part of my day and therefore I have no wish to be banned or to annoy Mods / Admin.
I have no problem with opening another thread about that particular topic. The problem lies in keeping it on topic, and avoiding its degradation into a political argument, which can quickly become contentious. That was the basis for closing the thread. Pipe Tobacco Legislation strings are generally short lived, and rarely last more than a single day.
Kevin and I (personally) will generally post a final reply referencing why a string is being closed. Lordnoble and Markw4mms (Jason and Mark) are new to the Moderators game, and are quickly coming up to speed on the subtleties of Forum Moderation. It's not as easy as it sounds. The learning curve is very steep but, is very rewarding.
As for being banned, don't worry about it. That is something that happens very rarely, and only in extreme cases.

We're glad to have you. Your posts have been good one's and you are definitely an asset to the membership.

There are members that are isolated by geography, have physical limitations, and have occupations that limit their social interactions, so we can and do understand that these Forums are vital to many members here.
We all appreciate your insightful postings, and want to read many-many more.

Lawrence - Thank you for your post :) It has been something of a trying day and seeing that thread closed was the final straw and led to a stronger reaction from me than would normally be the case. Having been both a Mod and Admin on another forum I fully understand the problems (and rewards) it can bring.
As I have now had a reply from my Member of Parliament about the proposed car smoking ban I will post up another thread and hope that others will bring this matter to the attention of their M.P.

The new and hopefully on topic version of the thread can be found here - http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/smoking-ban-in-cars-uk-a-step-too-far
The reply I got from my Member of Parliament
Dear **** ******,
Thank you for your email.
My understanding is that was entirely a lobbying exercise by the BMA.
I am not sure how and in what way they have put this forward to the Department of Health. Certainly I don't think anyone has suggested that smoking in cars should be criminalised. Apart from anything else I think it would be incredibly difficult to enforce.
Best wishes
Tony Baldry
It seems that the British Medical Association is just firing a shot across the bows and trying to gauge public support (or lack of it)

I aired my views on this closed topic and would not want to do it again if the topic is reposted under a differant title. I was following all threads and was happy to see all differant views except for when it became a slagging of all England folk and can only guess that this was the reason for it being closed, if this was the reason surely the person that posted the slagging should be imformed of this so the he thinks twice about such a posting again.
