The dregs are called 'Dottle' as far as I know, unless it's Dottie?

Somehow I don't think this question goes in the noob section as it would be an individual ritual.
Question, do some of you take the Dottle on the bottom, dump it, refill with fresh and put the Dottle on top?

Seems a decent way to get a good burn going right away.

too much tar ... not good for your health and you lose the freshness of the first puff

Dottle rarely forms in my pipes. Could be I nearly always smoke half-bowls. The few times I smoked an aro the dottle magically appeared toward then end of the bowl.
I tend to agree with halfy.

Sherlock Holmes collected the dottle from his pipes throughout the day, then smoked it all at breakfast the next morning.
I couldn't do it. Maybe one day I will try, but it just doesn't sound like it would taste too good to me.

Sometimes I dump it. Sometimes I load more tobacco on top of it, if I want to smoke for a while longer.

Well, I tried it and it's fine by me.

Gets the bowl going nicely, fast.
I only have one tobacco so far (Balkan Sasieni) and it is great tasting, top to bottom, so if I bring the bottom to the top, I enjoy it very much even if it's mostly used up.
I am enjoying the pipe more than I thought I would, I just hope this BS stuff is not going to be my favourite tobacco making anything else I try pale by comparison. (But if BS is my fave, so be it!)
I got 2 more kinds coming.

Dottle has acted as a filter to the packed bowl already. I don't think it saves much money re-using it, and

it sure doesn't improve the flavor. I'd just let it go. Trying to smoke every bowl down to white ash is

unnecessary. It's nice when it happens, but doesn't prove much. When Sherlock Holmes was smoking,

I think tobacco prices were steep; also, Sherlock was a notorious eccentric, fascinating to watch, but

not to be emulated, except in the private detective department. That's my take; apologies to those who

like to re-use.

Why on earth would someone wish to place ‘dottle’, which I refer to as ‘pipe crap’ on top of perfectly good new tobacco! Granted, I’ll try to smoke a bowl all the way to the bottom, but if it becomes distasteful in any way it’s dumped. After all, why sit down for a relaxing smoke for an hour or more to only end it on a sour note because you can’t stand the thought of wasting a few miniscule bits of tobacco.
As for the idea of saving this ‘pipe crap’ and placing in it in a jar for future smoking is beyond my comprehension. If one is so cheap and hard up for money to do that than they would be better served to picking up discarded stogie’s and cigarette butts to smoke off of the street. But... that's just my 'pipe crap' opinion.

What I have left is brown and black after I dump out the gray.

I don't know if it's what I am smoking but I enjoy it the same with crispy crap on top or not.
It's up to the individual or the blend I guess.
It also helps to economise if you are a Canadian, getting tobacco through a B&M or mail is a bit more expensive than for residents of the USA.
