I use an extra long pipe cleaner attached to my vise. I charge the pipe cleaner with automotive valve grinding compound and work the stem back and forth on the pipe cleaner - then follow with a fresh pipe cleaner and Flitz(TM)...
Interesting idea. I'll have to think about that one, but I also think I like it.

Just widen the bottom half of the stem. If possible, tapered wide toward bottom. What happens is, the condensed water will slide down since the bottom of the stem has bigger drill opening, it will drop to the mortise. problem is, if mortise is not deep, it will gurgle at the draught hole on stummel side, possibly. That's what Peterson System pipe stems are like to collect the condensation to the water trap
