There was an MD in New Jersey who died and left about 550 pipes. I think it was reported on another site. I looked at the detailed pictures and counted them in amazement. Some looked good, some like junk. All kinds of pipes:ceramic pipes with metal covers and pictures on the sides, cherrywoods with bark, and lots of briars. I believe his widow auctioned them off as a lot. Don't know who bought them, probably a dealer. Now THAT was pad. A few hundred, for someone who smokes a lot, is not. My own collection would be almost 200 if I had the space for them. I have been selling and giving them away because I have nowhere to keep them. My friend came over the other night to learn about pipesmoking. He left with a Peterson Hudson and a corncob. Finally I have it down to a number that will fit in the racks.
